Disappointment with The Beginning After The End adaptation has reached a fever pitch. A fan-made petition critical of the show has now garnered over 40,000 signatures. The petition, started on March 31, strongly demands a better adaptation to replace the current one.

This demand for change comes as the new anime for The Beginning After The End continues to disappoint and anger some of its die-hard fans with its weekly episode drops. While trailers for the popular manhwa series' first anime foray were initially met with skepticism, it wasn’t until the episodes started actually airing that fans really started raising their voices. Now, an increasing number of critical voices are sounding off, and the number of signatures on the petition only continues to climb.

TBATE’s Animation Troubles

The Cause of the Controversy

Many excited fans of the manhwa and web novel who were eager for this anime to come out found themselves dismayed by the show’s lack of polish and animation. So far, all of The Beginning After The End’s major action scenes have featured panning still images with heavy action lines and minimal character movement.

When I saw the first episode it genuinely ruined my week, when I saw the second episode I vowed not to watch the third because of how upsetting it was to sit through. I love seeing it animated, but unfortunately I’ve seen maybe 5 frames of that across 40 minutes. Please cancel the anime somehow and stop this, I’d be fine waiting 10 years if it meant an even half decent adaptation. It’s disrespectful to the author, the source material, and the fans who have supported it. This is not what we want, nobody wants to see this. -Petition supporter Sawyer from Palm Bay

This perception of the series’ animation quality seems widely shared across social media and internet forums, where viewers post clips and roast the show’s animation flubs. TBATE is a manwha with a high pedigree, with its fans seeing it on the level of Solo Leveling or Tower of God. To them, the disconnect between the subpar animation and the high-quality story contained in The Beginning After The End feels like a great injustice.

Some have also criticized the anime adaptation for other gripes. The show features a darker tone that is absent from some of the humor found in the panels of the manhwa. Some viewers also aren't fans of the art direction in some scenes, feeling like the muted colors and simple art style don’t mesh with the land of Dicathen.

Will The Petition Have Any Effect?

Fans are Divided on a Resolution

The petition has served as a rallying point for unhappy TBATE fans online, but it's unclear what a proper resolution for their disappointment will be. Some are asking for a complete cancellation of the series, wanting to preserve the integrity of the source material, while others have called for a more measured approach. In an update, the petition creator clarified their intent and demanded that hate towards the series' creator stop.

“GUYS, it’s not TurtleMe’s decision entirely, if at all. Do NOT DIRECT YOUR HATE TO TURTLEME. He’s trying his best. Be grateful he even made TBATE in the first place. Stop hating.

Also, we just want better animation. That’s it. We don’t want the anime to be canceled, we just want a redo or more realistically, better animation for the next seasons.” -Petition starter Nachoo TM

A portion of this online hate seems to be a response to a clip that has resurfaced online of the web novel author TurtleMe speaking in an interview about his decision to choose Studio A-Cat. Some fans feel this interview shows that the series creator dropped the ball and didn’t do enough diligence to ensure the anime would succeed.

“With A-Cat, one thing that I was reassured by was the fact that I could be a bit more involved, have more conversations, and really work together to come up with a really strong anime.” -Brandon Lee aka TurtleMe.

While anti-TBATE sentiments remain high online, the anime has already been confirmed to have two cours and a total of 24 episodes. This means disappointed fans will likely have to sit through quite a bit of the current animation studio’s work before there is even a chance for a change in direction for The Beginning After The End.

The Beginning After the End can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
