The interactions between Maomao, Jinshi, and the rest of the characters were always intriguing, so fans never felt that they were disingenuous.
After generating so much hype with its first season, it is hardly surprising that so many people were eagerly waiting for the new season. They wanted to see Maomao and the rest of the characters back in action. Some people expected a slow start to season two, but that couldn't have been more wrong.

The Apothecary Diaries season two episode 1 starts with Jinshi visiting the concubines. During his visit, he noticed that Loulan had an abnormally high number of ladies-in-waiting. He feels that it is unfair to the other concubines. However, his mind is occupied with finding Maomao. Luckily for Jinshi, Gyokuyou points him in the right direction. She reveals that Maomao is in the clinic, where she is working on scented oils. Maomao decided to stay away from the Jade Pavilion because she did not want to cause any problems for Gyokuyou, who is pregnant. Maomao is aware that her experiments can release fumes that can result in a miscarriage.
As the episode progresses, a consignment of books arrives that consists of various techniques on how to appease the Emperor. Upon reaching the clinic, Jinshi finds Maomao and learns more about her work. However, he does not stop her from working. Meanwhile, Gaoshun has to take away the books to censor obscene material.
The Rise Of The Novels In The Palace
Just days after the arrival of the books, a novel starts making rounds in the palace. Almost everyone is fascinated by the book. Eventually, Maomao stumbles across the book, and she recognizes the seal on it. Maomao concludes that the emperor is trying to promote literacy in the palace. So, she decides to speak to Ailan and urges her to make copies of the novel so that servants can read it too. This would be a massive step in improving the literacy rate in the palace.

Xiaolan, one of Maomao's closest friends, is intrigued by the novel. So, she decides to learn to read and write, which would allow her to understand the novel. Xiaolan also feels that being able to read and write will enable her to improve her standing and create a better future for her. Towards the end of the episode, Maomao encounters a stray kitten. After catching her, she is allowed to keep it as a pet.
The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 2 Release Date
The Apothecary Diaries Season 2 Episode 2 will be released on January 17, 2025. The episode is titled "Caravan." Judging from the preview, it seems that the episode will delve into the mystery of a burned caravan. Naturally, Maomao will be heavily involved in the investigation as she has solved a ton of mysteries.
Additionally, the episode will focus on Maomao's bond with the cat. After a shaky start, the heroine will want to get on the feline's good side. There is also a good chance that the episode will disclose more information about Shisui, the enigmatic lady-in-waiting. After making her debut in the first episode, Shisui immediately caught the attention of viewers. Unfortunately, there is very little information available about her. Hopefully, that will change in the next episode.
