With the constant threat of the sun burning away everything on the planet, magnetic storms, and the regular day-to-day damage incurred by rolling across a harsh and rocky environment, the base in The Alters sees a lot of damage. Because some of these events happen randomly, like the magnetic storm, players never quite know when they will need a lot of repair kits on hand.

Being caught unprepared in The Alters can be catastrophic, especially if it requires the players to reload several save files from the past to ensure they're prepared to take care of the base. After all, if the base falls into too much disrepair, it will no longer protect those living within it.

The Alters: Trophy/Achievement Guide

There are a total of fifty-six achievements or trophies in The Alters, and some of them are not easy to complete without a bit of help.

There are two types of damage that players will need to keep an eye on while taking care of their base. These include standard damage, or physical damage, and radiation damage, which players can prevent with radiation filters. This guide will show players how to automate the repair process in The Alters to ensure they're always ready for the next disaster.

How to Repair the Base in The Alters

Repair Kit Blueprint in The Alters

The damage the base in The Alters takes can be sneaky. Players typically aren't made aware of it until the damage starts to get really bad. By that point, the base requires Repair Kits to fix the damage. Repair Kits are a type of consumable that any Alter can use to repair the base. They're created in the Workshop, which players will be able to build before they progress into Act I of The Alters. To make a Repair Kit, players will need:

  • 10 Metals
  • 1 Minute

Metals are a common resource in the game, but it's possible to run out of sources of metals, especially in the Prologue.

Metals can also be refined from Enriched Metals with the Refinery.

Once the Repair Kit is queued in the Workshop, the player or an Alter will need to make it on the assembly line. Repair Kits can be stored in the base like resources. Whenever the base takes enough damage that it warrants the use of a Repair Kit, the Alter assigned to repairing the base will take the Repair Kit and use it to repair the base. After use, the Repair Kit disappears.

How to Prevent Radiation Damage

Radiation Filter Blueprint

In The Alters, the planet regularly secretes radiation, so the base needs to constantly use Radiation Filters to prevent it from seeping into the base and damaging the player and the alters. Magnetic storms can make the base go through Radiation Filters even faster, so players will need to keep a close eye on the number of filters in storage to prepare for such an event. Like Repair Kits, Radiation Filters are made in the Workshop. They require the following:

  • 10 Metals
  • 40 Organics
  • 2 Minutes

Unlike Repair Kits, players can have the radiation shield automatically stock itself with Radiation Filters as needed. Whenever the shield goes through a Radiation Filter and an empty slot is left behind, if there's a filter in storage, then the shield will take it from the storage and queue it for use when needed. As long as Radiation Filters are powering the shield, the base will stay safe from radiation damage.

How to Automate Base Repairs

There's so much to do in The Alters that it's easy to let the base slip by. Doing so, however, can end the game prematurely when the base falls apart and everyone dies from radiation. Automating the repair process can ensure that the base is maintained without requiring constant supervision.

The first step is to set up resource outposts as possible. Since Repair Kits and Radiation Filters require Metals and Organics, those are the two resources players should cover first. With a steady supply of resources coming in, players won't face a bottleneck when trying to craft kits and filters.

Next, assign Alters to make Repair Kits and Radiation Filters in the Workshop. The cool thing is that players can set a desired number of kits and filters to have in storage (referred to as Uphold). If the number falls below the desired level, then someone will go to the Workshop and make them until they're topped off again. While players shouldn't have tons of kits and filters in storage, having anywhere between 5 and 10 of each in storage should see them through most storms and problems.

Players must experience their first magnetic storm before they unlock the ability to store a desired number of resources.

The final step is to assign the right Alters to the right job. Certain Alters get a bonus when performing certain jobs. To automate repairs and get the most out of the process, assign the following Alters as follows:

  • Jan Technician: Base Repairs (+50% Base Maintenance Efficiency)
  • Jan Miner: Mining Outposts (+50% Mining Efficiency)
  • Jan Worker: Workshop (+50% Crafting Efficiency)

It's not a bad idea to have Jan Refiner, too. He receives a +50% Refining Enriched Metals Efficiency, which can be useful if all the metal deposits in the area have already been mined out.

Keeping the Alters happy is also important. If they become too unhappy, they may refuse to work, which can completely stop the automation process. Players can increase Alter happiness by providing gifts, talking to them, and completing tasks they offer.

With all these steps ticked off, players will never run out of Repair Kits or Radiation Filters in The Alters, ensuring their base remains in good condition even in the face of a disaster.
