The legendary indie sandbox game Terraria reached an impressive milestone years in the making, officially selling more copies than the original Super Mario Bros. Terraria launched in 2011, and despite its rather humble beginnings, would later redefine an entire genre of video games, becoming one of the most successful indie games of all time.

Hitting Steam in 2011, few indie titles have become quite as successful as Terraria. Tasking players with building, fighting, and crafting, Terraria ushered in a new age for the sandbox genre, immersing players in a colorful 2D world. Over the years, Terraria has been updated and developed further, with the game now featuring over 5,000 unique items and a total of 33 different bosses to slay. While much more action-oriented than other titles in the same genre, Terraria still asks players to let their creativity flourish, providing players with dozens of different blocks and building materials. Terraria garnered a massive following over the years, now reaching a jaw-dropping sales milestone.

Terraria Gives Update on Patch 1.4.5

Patch 1.4.5 is expect to be a major update for Terraria, and the developers showcased some of its features in their latest State of the Game post.

Developer Re-Logic confirmed Terraria's impressive new sales numbers in a June "State of the Game" post from the team. ReLogic shared the news that the game had officially sold more copies than Nintendo's classic Super Mario Bros. On the NES. As of June 2024, Terraria has sold over 58 million copies, beating Super Mario Bros.' 58 million. In 2021, Terraria reached 35 million copies sold. The last update regarding Terraria's sales numbers was shared back in 2022, with the game hitting the 44 million mark. Re-Logic stated the reason there hadn't been an update in over two years was because the studio was purposefully waiting to reach this new "Mario" milestone.

Terraria Sells More Copies Than Super Mario Bros.

Terraria has ranked as a top seller on places like Steam for years, becoming an icon within the indie and sandbox genres. Mixing a unique, visually stunning art style with challenging enemies and intense boss fights, Terraria is a somewhat hard game to truly define, granting players a high level of freedom. Players can easily spend hundreds of hours finding, collecting, and upgrading all the weapons and items in the game, with Terraria also lending itself to fun base building and construction due to the sheer number of different blocks at players' disposal.

Terraria's Journey's End update acted as the capstone to players' nearly decade-long adventure. Developers stated Journey's End would be the last major content update for the game, though Terraria has seen new upgrades and updates in the years since. The ReLogic team says that it's "beyond humbled and thankful" to hit this incredible milestone, teasing that something cool may happen when Terraria eventually reaches the 60 million mark.
