In the visual, fantasy world of Terraria, appearance is everything. Players obsess over the looks of their environment, their elaborate houses, and their character. Cosmetic or Vanity items are a great way for players to obtain a unique and interesting look for their character while still wearing valuable armor and gear.
Terraria: 8 Ways To Spice Up Gameplay
If the gameplay of Terraria is starting to feel too routine, here are a few things players can do to make it a little more exciting.
There are dozens of cosmetic items that appear in the game ranging from simple hats to entire costumes. From Halloween events to updates the developers have introduced a variety of unique and iconic looks for players to use. In no particular order, here are some of the best cosmetic sets the game has to offer.
Updated February 2, 2025 by Stephen LaGioia: Terraria is about as open-ended as they come, as far as 2D scrollers go, and this certainly applies to the vanities and other amusing cosmetics in this epic. There are tons of awesome ones to discover in Terraria; an outfit guaranteed to suit every player's desires. And there are more promised to come with the anticipated 1.4.5 update scheduled this year, which will add a few vanities to the large collection. These include a Dead Cells-themed costume, along with a Beach Wear and winged 'Heroics' set.
To add to the hype of this update, and given how many cool choices there are, it seemed appropriate to further dress up this list of some of the best vanity sets to wear in Terraria.
23 Fish Set
Appropriate When Fishing For Terraria's Endless Loot
This gilled, seafaring set is quite fitting given the amount of deep dives and "fishing" players will likely be partaking in when searching the vast lands of Terraria. The three-piece consists of a Costume Mask, Costume Shirt, and the biggest key component, a Costume Finskirt.
In staying with its theme, this amusing outfit can be caught randomly as a reward upon finishing a Fishing quest via the Angler NPC. Be sure to keep fishing for this scaly set!
22 Princess (Default And Clothier)
Glamorous And Deadly
In driving the game's fantasy elements home and breaking from the more masculine elements of the game, Terraria offers a rather imaginative, elegant gown called the Princess Set. This lovely outfit covers the whole body, though it only consists of two items — a Princess Hat (which extends quite a bit to the point where it adds height) and a Princess Dress. The basic Princess Set can be obtained from Goodie Bags with a 2/57 (or 3.51% chance).
There is additionally the Clothier rendition of the dress, which sports a golden tiara rather than a pointy hat — and that variant is glamorous in its own right. This is a Hardmode vanity that's purchasable from the Clothier for 35 Gold Coins, but only during a New Moon.
21 Steampunk
A Thematically-Fitting Outfit
Who doesn't enjoy a gritty, imaginative Steampunk thriller? This one leans into the shades of Steampunk themes scattered about this colorful adventure.
7 Best Steampunk Strategy Games, Ranked
Steampunk is one of the most popular alternate history fantasy genres, and these games combine it with strategy gameplay for a steamy good time.
It's purchasable from (who else?) The Steampunker, for 4 Gold and 50 Silver Coins. There is a catch beyond its price, too. Players must buy this outfit during the full and waning moon phases. This whole retro-sci-fi set comprises the particularly cool Steampunk Hat, as well as the Steampunk Shirt and Pants.
20 Plumber
Taking A Detour From The Mushroom Kingdom
There are doubtless a decent amount of Super Mario fans who have crossed over from the Mushroom Kingdom into this equally vibrant, lush world. It makes sense, given its 2D, action-based gameplay that stresses exploration and fending off foes.
For those gamers, the humble Plumber set should be a good aesthetic option. Interestingly, the old-gen console version and Windows Phone version flip the standard red and blue Mario colors, while the newer and majority of platforms sport the unapologetically Mario-esque look with the red shirt and blue overalls.
The Plumber's Hat yields a 1/250 chance of being dropped by Fire Imps. Players can farm Imp Statues for a better chance at one. Meanwhile, the shirt and pants can be had in a more standard fashion. They're offered by the Clothier for 25 Gold Coins each (during a full moon).
19 Silly Sunflower
It's Always Sunny In Terraria
Sunflowers are a sunny staple in Terraria and can brighten up any player's day. When in the vicinity of the player, they get the 'Happy' buff, which increases their movement speed and decreases the monster spawn rate. Why wouldn't the player want to dress up as one?!
For players that want to live out their flora dreams, the Silly Sunflower set can be purchased from the Clothier NPC for nine Gold, but only when a Party is active.
18 Mermaid
A Siren Of The Pixelated Sea
Ever wanted to become a mermaid? The Mermaid vanity set in Terraria lets that dream become a reality! It comprises the Seashell Hairpin, Mermaid Adornment, and Mermaid Tail to let that dream become a reality and transform into an aquatic beauty.
All the player needs to do to obtain this stunning set is complete daily fishing quests for the Angler NPC, and it will eventually randomly be given as a reward. The Mermaid Tail transforms the player's legs and walking animation, so they look as though they are sliding.
17 Unicorn
This Unicorn Is Particularly Rare
Unicorns are rare and mythical creatures in normal circumstances, and they are even rarer in Terraria. The Unicorn set is made up of the Unicorn Mask, Unicorn Shirt, and Unicorn Pants.
Terraria: 13 Map Seeds That Make The Game Even Harder
From the dangers of the Jungle Biome to a barren land with no ocean, these challenging map seeds might confound even Terraria veterans!
The only method of obtaining this vanity set is through Goodie Bags, dropped by enemies during Halloween seasonal events, with a 5.26% chance of appearing. Pair the unicorn vanity set with the Blessed Apple unicorn mount for double the magic!
16 Mushroom
Toad Makes His Terraria Debut
Pop culture references are a great addition to any game, and Terraria is full of them! This next vanity set pays homage to the Nintendo franchise, Mario, and the character Toad.
The Mushroom vanity set is undoubtedly an interesting one and is made up of the Mushroom Hat, Mushroom Shirt, and Mushroom Pants, turning the player into Toad himself. It can only be found underground in the Mushroom Chests in the Glowing Mushroom Biome.
15 Karate Tortoise
Cowabunga!
Terraria features many pop culture references, and the next up is the Karate Tortoise, referencing the cult classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This vanity set is another one limited to the Halloween seasonal event and drops from Goodie Bags with a 5.26% chance. Wearing it turns the player into one of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Leonardo. The male and female variants of the set are exactly the same.
14 Ancient
From A Virtual Age Long Ago
The Ancient set is one of the best vanity items Terraria has in hard mode. It comprises the Ancient Headdress, Ancient Garments, and the Ancient Slacks. It bears a resemblance to the ancient Egyptian god of Anubis.
Players wanting this vanity set must craft it at the Loom. Each piece of the set will need the following ingredients 15 Silk and 5 Ancient Cloth. Silk is obtained from cobwebs and Ancient Cloth can rarely spawn from Ghouls. Fortunately, its only use in the game is to craft this particular vanity set or be sold.
