Summary

  • Tekken 8 has surpassed the previous game's concurrent player count on Steam, reaching almost 50,000 players shortly after release.
  • The game's popularity can be attributed to Tekken's growing fanbase and strong marketing efforts by Bandai Namco.
  • Tekken 8's momentum is expected to continue with the confirmation of a Year 1 Season Pass and the addition of four new characters, including the returning classic fighter Eddy Gordo.

Tekken 8 is off to a solid start on Steam, as it has surpassed the previous game's concurrent player count on the platform. Tekken 8 is the eighth mainline game in the long-running fighting game franchise, being touted as the grand finale of the Mishima Family storyline. A number of impressive fighting games were released in 2023, with major releases like Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1 being praised by fans and critics alike. With that in mind, Tekken 8 had a lot to live up to, and fortunately it seems to be doing just that.

Despite the pressure from competing fighting games, Tekken 8 remained one of 2024's most highly-anticipated releases, with fans excited to play as many of the characters on its roster or wanting to see how the fated confrontation between Jin Kazama and Kazuya Mishima would unfold in the game's story mode. After it finally launched near the end of January, Tekken 8 quickly became one of the best fighting games Bandai Namco launched on the Steam platform.

What is Tekken 8's Concurrent Peak Player Count?

SteamDB is a database that provides statistics and other information about the games sold on the Steam platform, including the number of concurrent players for a game. SteamDB's latest charts show that Tekken 8 has managed to hit almost 50,000 concurrent players on Steam, reaching this number about an hour after the game was released on the platform. When comparing this figure to Tekken 7's numbers, it's clear that it has blown the previous franchise release out of the water.

For reference, Tekken 7's concurrent player peak was nearly 19,000 players, which was around the time the game launched on Steam in June, which is a difference of a little over 31,000 players between the two games. Tekken 8's high numbers are likely due to how Tekken's popularity has grown in the last few years, along with strong marketing from Bandai Namco for the eighth game, which has seen glowing reviews for Tekken 8.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Published Fighting Game Concurrent Steam Player Peaks (According to SteamDB)

  • Tekken 8 - 49,977 concurrent players
  • Dragon Ball FighterZ - 44,303 concurrent players
  • Tekken 7 - 18,966 concurrent players
  • SoulCalibur 6 - 14,684 concurrent players

Based on the data from SteamDB, Tekken 8's concurrent player count peak has surpassed other fighting games that were published by Bandai Namco. While Tekken 8's numbers don't surpass the likes of Dark Souls 3 or Tales of Arise, it managed to surpass the previous milestone set by Dragon Ball FighterZ, having a peak of 44,303 players at launch. Additionally, Tekken 8 is currently maintaining a healthy peak of over 40,000 players two days after its launch.

Tekken 8's momentum shouldn't be slowing down, either, as Bandai Namco has already confirmed a Year 1 Season Pass, which will add four new characters to the game. Bandai Namco also confirmed Tekken 8's first DLC character, a returning classic fighter from the franchise, Eddy Gordo.
