The reveal trailer for the upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle game from THQ Nordic, TMNT: The Last Ronin, has dropped online, teasing the first-ever video game adaptation of the popular comic. TMNT: The Last Ronin was reported to be in development back in March, but at that point, the studio behind the game was still unknown.
The Last Ronin is a bit darker than the typical commercial Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series seen on the big screen or on television. The 2020 IDW-published comic tells the story of the lone surviving Turtle on a quest for revenge. Interestingly enough, the identity of the last remaining brother is initially a mystery. Outside of reports that the game was in development, the only other major information made available is that the game would take inspiration from Sony Santa Monica's God of War games.
During a THQ Nordic showcase, the publisher gave fans their first look at TMNT: The Last Ronin. The 45-second trailer teases the overall plot of the series with four candles obviously meant to represent the four Turtles. Each flame is extinguished as a scene plays in the background—presumably referring to the death of each of the brothers—until only one candle remains lit. The final shot shows the last-remaining Turtle taking on various robotic-looking foes with the text "in development" overlaid.
TMNT: The Last Ronin anchored a showcase that hyped up several other upcoming THQ Nordic games (like a new co-op South Park title) as the publisher likely hoped it would satiate fans as the one last announcement before signing off. The game also appears to be skipping the previous generation of consoles as it was announced to be in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
THQ Nordic is the developer and publisher behind the popular Darksiders series (among many other games), so fans are understandably optimistic about the upcoming comic book adaptation. The Darksiders' hack-and-slash action gameplay theoretically lends itself well to a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game, and the reported God of War inspiration also seems fit with the Last Ronin revenge story tone. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have had recent success in the video game space with beat-'em-up throwback Shredder's Revenge scoring positive reviews, but this upcoming title looks to be the series' foray into the AAA gaming space.
All in all, reports surrounding The Last Ronin are saying all the right things to fans of the franchise. Between the new Mutant Mayhem animated film and the Turtles crossing over with Street Fighter 6, it very much feels like the franchise is having a resurgence in pop culture. Hopefully, a brand new video game will be the exclamation point the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles faithful are waiting for. No release date has yet been announced.
TMNT: The Last Ronin is in development for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
