The five members of the 2003 Teen Titans series are endowed with abilities that give them the power they need to defend Jump City. Starfire's alien DNA gives her the ability to fly and shoot green energy blasts at her enemies. As a human/demon hybrid, Raven is able to channel power from her father's demonic plane of Azarath, allowing her to fly, create force fields, and move objects with her mind. Beast Boy can transform into any animal at will, a gift he honors with staunch veganism. Cyborg's technology-based enhancements offer many advantages, from GPS tracking to his signature sonic boom.
This extremely powerful group is led by the intense Robin, whose possession of any superpowers is much less cut and dry than the other four Titans. Nonetheless, Robin's position of leader is never in jeopardy, and the group consistently looks to him for reassurance and direction. His call of "Titans, go!", and his alone, is the group's classic call to action that begins nearly every battle in Jump City. Regardless of the presence of any superhuman ability, Robin holds his own and then some against the area's most fearsome opponents, galvanizing his team rather than burdening them. Does Robin Have Powers?
Robin does not have any superpowers. However, he has a mental fortitude and several highly developed skills that allow him to succeed where other humans fail. After witnessing Robin in combat, it is clear that he has superior martial arts and acrobatic skills, not to mention peak endurance and strength. The Teen Titans series doesn't neglect to show the Titans in training, where it becomes evident that none of the Titans possess the abilities they have without practice. Robin spearheads these training sessions, coaching and encouraging the rest of the Titans, while pushing himself to the max as well.
In addition to rigorous physical training, Robin has some tools that aid him in combat. His most commonly seen weapon is his collapsible, detachable metal staff. He is often seen whipping the staff out in battle, the rod extending from both sides as he expertly spins it around. Robin also has a utility belt that holds a variety of bomb-like devices. He has smoke bombs, flash bangs, explosives resembling mines, and grenades containing a range of debilitating substances. In addition, he has 'birdarangs', a hand-held bladed weapon that can be thrown and returns like a boomerang.
With all of these tools and skills, Robin has no problem keeping up with the rest of the Titans in combat. His suit in itself functions as body armor, with the cape proving to be especially helpful. While he is a capable motorcycle driver, and he and Cyborg are often seen driving, Robin's inability to fly is the only time his lack of powers proves to be a disadvantage. Even still, his intelligent, combat-wired mind manages to turn this into an asset with frequent coordinated moves with his team- Starfire often carries Robin by his arms as she flies through the air, dropping him right where he needs to be to defeat their opponent.
The Titans' Leader
Robin's authority is never questioned in Teen Titans. His devotion and persistence is what keeps the Titans on task, always prepared for whatever may come. In the rare instances when Robin himself needs support, when these qualities send him into a tailspin and persistence gives way to obsession, the rest of the team approaches him with a desire to help, not usurp his place as leader. Ultimately, it is Robin who makes the big decisions for the Teen Titans.
When the group began a friendship with the earth-bending Terra, it was Robin who decided if she deserved an invitation to be a Titan, despite Beast Boy's affection and Raven's skepticism, both of whom had feelings of greater intensity than Robin. It's exactly this objective, rational, mission-oriented train of thought that makes the Teen Titans such a well-oiled machine.
There is good and there is evil, but the line between can be almost impossible to find... In the end, all I really know is that the answers don't come easy. It's supposed to be simple, but it's not.
However, that same mission-oriented hyper-focus can at times become Robin's only weakness. After Slade eludes him one too many times, the rivalry between the two grows personal. Robin stoops so low as to create a villainous persona, Red X, as an attempt to infiltrate Slade's inner circle. To earn his trust, Robin, as Red X, commits crimes that alert the rest of the Titans, who he has neglected to tell of his plan. Robin is forced into battle with the Titans, who are confused both by the absence of their leader and this new, mysterious villain. The impact of Robin's leadership of the Titans is evident.
How can you save a city, Robin, when you can't save yourself?
Raven, Starfire, Beast Boy, and Cyborg are all reluctant to step in and call the shots as it feels like taking Robin's place- even when he isn't there. However, the group's repetitive training under his guidance is evident as well, as the rest of the Titans ultimately overcome Robin's absence and fight the battle in front of them, just as Robin would want them to. Robin, for his part, is careful not to hurt any of his teammates too badly, but his time as Red X reveals his darker, more solitary nature. While he is an incredibly understanding and supportive friend and leader, he sometimes needs reminding that he deserves the same grace he affords to others.
