As Thor: Love and Thunder wraps up its first weekend at the box office where it raked in a whopping $302 million dollars, many fans are wondering who will direct the potential Thor 5. Now, Taika Waititi, who's directed the last two Thor films, is speaking up on the matter.

With the message “Thor will return” being confirmed following Thor: Love and Thunder's end credit scenes, many fans are wondering if Thor will return in another standalone film or in an action-packed team-up Avengers film. Another question is Waititi's future with the franchise he helped revive with the acclaimed Thor: Ragnarok.

In a recent interview with Insider, Waititi revealed he had no idea Marvel Studios would be adding the message about Thor returning to the big screen at the end of the film. "That was a surprise to me, too. I’m not joking,” Waititi said before he went on to recall the moment, saying, “I saw it in the theater, and I was like, ‘Oh, sh-t. Really?’ Even Chris was like, ‘What?’ But, of course, he’ll be back. He’s the best character. I mean, I may be a little biased, but he’s the most fun to watch.”

However, Waititi made it clear he would be 100 percent open to returning as Thor's director, as long as actor Chris Hemsworth returned to star as the Space Viking. “Now, I don’t know what would be next. I would definitely do one, but only if Chris did it," Waititi said. “But it would need to be something surprising and unexpected for me to want to do it. Like what would be the new take?”

The ending of Thor: Love and Thunder sets up Thor's next journey as most likely being about him acting as a parental figure for Love (played by India Rose Hemsworth), the daughter of Gorr the God Butcher (played by Christian Bale). Plus, with the introduction of Hercules (played by Brett Goldstein) and the Gods now having it out for The God of Thunder, the fifth Thor adventure has a lot of potential material for Waititi to utilize.

Although Waititi returning to the directorial position for the next Installment within the Thor franchise is still up in the air, Thor's next appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to be confirmed as a solo film yet. However, with Waititi open to returning and with comments Hemsworth has made in the past about wanting to continue playing the hero, it's not far-fetched to say that Marvel fans will most likely get a fifth Thor film starring Hemsworth with Waititi behind the camera.
