The anime action RPG Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream is getting a new character, as the video game franchise original Fuuka Shinozaki will appear in the game starting on January 9 following scheduled maintenance. Fuuka will join the ongoing title in its upcoming second season as a mage, giving players access to brand-new magical abilities as she joins the roster of fan favorites and new faces from across the Sword Art Online franchise.
Sword Art Online continues to grow as a major anime franchise, spanning multiple seasons of a TV series along with several spinoffs and a successful ongoing collection of video games. Its latest console game offering was last year's Sword Art Online Fractured Daydream, a multiplayer co-op action RPG featuring an original storyline and characters from across the entire franchise.

Now, as the multiplayer game enters Season 2 of its online co-op content, players will gain access to a new playable character when one of the game's key heroines, Fuuka Shinozaki, joins the roster on January 9. The official Twitter account for the Sword Art Online video game franchise revealed the character with a short gameplay clip showing off some of her combat abilities, which appear to involve a mix of magical ranged attacks and area-of-effect damage to aid the player in combat.

According to the post, all players have to do to unlock Fuuka as a playable character is to finish the main story quest in Fractured Daydream which will seemingly be available when the season starts. Before fans can enjoy the new content that will come with the upcoming season, however, they will have to wait until after the upcoming scheduled maintenance for the game begins on January 8, with Season 2 set to begin the day after.
Of course, SAO Fractured Daydream is only the most recent video game outing from the massively popular anime franchise, as the series has spawned a multitude of games in both co-op and single-player genres. Recently, the series even saw the return of the mobile title Sword Art Online: Variant Showdown following a slew of bug fixes and maintenance after the game failed to make a splash with fans initially.
In any case, between new content in its latest games and a slew of other RPGs based on the original anime's several seasons of content, there is no shortage of material for fans to enjoy.
