During the September 12 Nintendo Direct showcase, developer ProbablyMonsters revealed that it had shadow dropped its fast-paced co-op roguelike, Storm Lancers, exclusively for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. With an eye-catching art style inspired by 1980s cartoons, Storm Lancers is just one of two games revealed to be in development at the studio founded by former Bungie CEO and president, Harold Ryan.
Opening its doors in 2016, ProbablyMonsters is trying out a new, more sustainable way to create games, and these first two projects put the new model to the test. The other game, sporting a more realistic style reminiscent of PT, is titled Ire: A Prologue and dishes up a psychological horror experience that will be released on Steam and Epic Games Store on October 28.
ProbablyMonsters’ Debut Title Storm Lancers Shadow Drops Exclusively for Switch and Switch 2
ProbablyMonsters’ debut title, Storm Lancers, was shadow dropped on September 12 during the Nintendo Direct event and retails for only $19.99. Available exclusively on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 consoles, Storm Lancers was designed for couch co-op, offering a combo-focused offworld adventure for two players. In the retro-style roguelike game, the protagonists have just crash landed on the alien world of Cryptica, which just so happens to hide a secret source of magic. Reality is about to collapse, and that means it’s time to set out to save the planet.
Storm Lancers has some well-known industry veterans behind it. Besides former Bungie dev Harold Ryan, Jim Veevaert (Microsoft, Zynga) and Seth Thompson (Blizzard) have also thrown in their combined years of game development experience. With a focus on high-energy side-scrolling action, Storm Lancers for Nintendo Switch aims to deliver another winner for fans of couch co-op games. However, it's possible to enjoy the space-based adventure solo as well, in case a potential partner is MIA or needs to take a break for a little while. And the bite-sized experience can be completed in about 10 hours, though being a roguelike, it has plenty of replayability backing it up.
ProbablyMonsters has delivered multiple biomes to explore while players unravel the mystery behind what's happening to Cryptica and the imminent threat to reality. Not only are there new items to uncover that will change up the feel of each run, there are also permanent upgrades so that players aren't always starting at square one. Partners' abilities will work together, thanks to various abilities, weapons, and power ups, and the combination will be necessary to get through the various bosses and enemies standing in the way.
