Summary

  • After 15 seasons and a failed spinoff with The Winchesters, Supernatural is returning with new stories.
  • A new comic book set between seasons 1 and 2 of Supernatural is coming from a lauded creative team.
  • A comic book is a nice continuation, but fans may want a Supernatural revival series.

Supernatural is returning with a new series, but it may not be what fans of the horror show expected. Over the course of its impressive 15-season run, Supernatural became a beloved series. It followed the exploits of Sam and Dean Winchester as they battled various forces of evil, like demons, vampires, and even angels, offering regular doses of humor and emotional depth.

The series expanded into various other forms of media, including comics, books, and even an anime series. Supernatural has even tried their hand at different spinoff ideas to keep the longevity of the IP going, with mostly lackluster results. However, the fan-favorite show is returning with new stories, but it may not be what fans of Supernatural were hoping to get for the next iteration of Sam and Dean.

The Winchesters Really Wasn't The Answer

Several spinoffs of Supernatural were attempted, with some ideas pursued while the show was still airing. Wayward Sisters was an attempt at a spinoff in the show's thirteenth season, with an episode of Supernatural acting as a backdoor pilot for the idea that would have seen recurring character Sheriff Jody Mills leading her own series of female protagonists. However, the CW passed on the show, much like a similar setup the show attempted in season 9 with Supernatural: Bloodlines, which would have been a gangster crime drama where various monsters headed the families of Chicago's crime scene.

The Winchesters was a spinoff that followed the finale of Supernatural but acted as a prequel, telling the story of John and Mary, Sam and Dean's parents. The show only lasted a single season, failing to recapture the magic of its source material. However, with a fanbase as loyal as Supernatural's, the characters are likely to continue on in a new form or spinoff. There have been rumors of a revival series, which remains to be officially confirmed, but for now, there is a new Supernatural series on the way that could satiate fans.

Supernatural Is Coming Back With A Unique New Comic Book Set During The Show

It Offers Up The Freedom Necessary To Tell Interesting Stories

Supernatural is set to tell new stories set during the show's run in a new comic book series. The horror series has graced the pages of comics before, with the new books offering a unique angle for fans. Thanks to WB and Dynamite Entertainment (via SuperHeroHype), the series will be making the distinct choice to focus on stories set between seasons 1 and 2 of the long-running show. Given the comics' place in the Supernatural timeline, other characters that could prove essential to the comics beyond Sam and Dean would likely be John Winchester, Meg, and Azazel, all of whom played a role in the events of the season 1 finale.

The new Supernatural comic will debut in October. It is written by lauded author Greg Pak and artist Eder Messias. Pak is known for his work on Planet Hulk, World War Hulk, and Star Wars: Darth Vader, and Messias has worked on Spider-Man, Moon Knight, and Predator. The two creators have also worked together previously on Captain America. Pak stated, "Fans of Supernatural know the show is a blast, and it’s an enormous pleasure and privilege to be able to dig into this wild world." The author also promised fans of the show:

We’re going for fun and grounded, and then we’re going to absolutely cut loose when the time comes.

A Supernatural Comic Is Great, But Fans Still Want A Proper Follow-Up To The Show

Sam and Dean looking serious in Supernatural

While The Winchesters didn't last, and other spinoffs failed to get off the ground, fans of Supernatural continue to rewatch the series, keeping its legacy alive. There is even a fan-made video game based on the series called Unnatural that is currently being developed. When a show lasts as long as Supernatural, it endures for a reason, and Sam and Dean have repeatedly proven to be that magic. Even when fans enjoy forays in new directions, the brotherly relationship at the center of the shows seems to be what made it work as well as it did. While other attempts at spinoff shows feel likely, fans would love a revival series to bring their beloved characters back for more episodes.

Rumors of a revival series have been hinted at, with the stars of Supernatural, Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki, reportedly both on the same page about things. Even Castiel actor Misha Collins has expressed similar sentiments about the possible revival. During the recent 20th anniversary interviews (via Tech Advisor), the three were in attendance, and Padalecki stated:

We’re all a lot older than we were 20 years ago. I don’t know if I have 22 episodes of Supernatural in me. I think a limited series would be great.

The actors have found post-Supernatural success, with Ackles on The Boys, where Padalecki and Collins are set to join him, thanks to the superhero series having the same creator. Padalecki also succeeded with Walker, and Ackles has even voiced Batman several times for DC in recent years. While the actors have kept busy, they remain close and appear to love the series as much as the fans, making the possibility of a revival possible at any point. While an official revival series remains to be seen, Supernatural fans have a run of comics to help flesh out their beloved horror world even more.
