Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been one of Nintendo's strongest ongoing titles ever since it released back in 2018. It's taken the crossover-fighting game genre to whole new heights, and is arguably one of the most ambitious fighting games to ever be published. With E3 wrapped up, many fans are still collecting themselves after the announcement that Tekken's Kazuya Mishima will be the next fighter included in Fighter Pass 2. At the same time however, there are some that are already chomping at the bit to know who will possibly be the very last DLC character.
Ever since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate released, fan speculation has run rampant on who will be added to the game next. Some of those dreams have been fulfilled, with Banjo & Kazooie and Minecraft's Steve being some of the most surprising additions. One fan request has yet to be fulfilled, however, and that is the Doom Guy from the recently rebooted Doom franchise. Doom Guy has been one of a handful of FPS characters that have been requested by a decent chunk of fans, but with the announcement of Kazuya, it's becoming increasingly unlikely that Doom fans will get the representation they want in Ultimate.
The Basis For Doom Guy To Be In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The requests for Doom Guy to be in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate are largely born out of two things. Firstly, Doom Guy is in similar company to Halo's Master Chief in that he could shake up gameplay by introducing a new projectile-based character with some more mature themes. Nintendo has already shown a willingness to take this approach with characters like Bayonetta, so for a while it wasn't a stretch to think that Doom Guy could be a similar inclusion.
The other part of Doom Guy's requests have come from his his hilarious relationship with Animal Crossing's Isabelle, originating when the starkly different Doom Eternal and Animal Crossing: New Horizons released on the same day in March of last year. As fun as the idea sounds on paper however, the amount of things working against Doom Guy being in Smash Ultimate are becoming too overwhelming to ignore.
Everything Working Against Doom Guy Being In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
At this point, it seems there are too many factors working against a Doom Guy DLC for him to ever be appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. One of the biggest things is that, as far as DLC character requests are concerned, Doom Guy isn't very high on the list of iconic characters that have been requested in the past. In the history of Super Smash Bros. DLC rumors, many fans have been more vocal about wanting characters like Crash Bandicoot or the aforementioned Master Chief. If Nintendo was really going to go for star-power to finish out what could be the last DLC pack for Ultimate, there are simply better options that would get more attention.
On top of those circumstances, Doom Guy probably isn't coming to Ultimate simply because Nintendo has different priorities for the game's DLC. If the surprise announcement of Kazuya is any indication, Nintendo seems more concerned with recognizing characters it deems worthy, rather than entertaining the wants of fans. At this point, it seems very possible that the last DLC fighter won't be anyone that fans have requested, which basically dashes any hopes that Doom Guy will get an invitation.
With how wide the reach of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's DLC is, it's understandable to speculate on some of the most exciting and unlikely characters that could be included. Doom Guy isn't the only character that fans have wanted for some time, but unfortunately it now seems that he is the most unlikely candidate for the next DLC fighter. It's too early to say exactly when the very last DLC fighter will be announced, but Doom fans would be wise to manage their expectations when the time comes.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is available now for Nintendo Switch.
