Summary

  • Byte Breakers, a Super Smash Bros.-inspired battle royale, features 40 player fights.
  • Developed by Odyssey Interactive, the game integrates the Omega Strikers cast.
  • The open playtest on Steam runs from September 12-16, allowing players to provide feedback for future updates.

Byte Breakers has been revealed by Omega Strikers developer Odyssey Interactive, and it plays like a Super Smash Bros. Battle royale. As Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. Series is the pioneer of the platform fighting game genre, many games have tried to take its elements and put their own spin on it. Some Smash clones are more successful than others, especially since Smash still has a thriving and passionate community. One of the latest games to dip their toes in this genre will be Byte Breakers, developed by Odyssey Interactive.

Odyssey Interactive is best known for the free-to-play Steam hit Omega Strikers, a 3v3 arena game with colorful characters and gameplay reminiscent of Nintendo's Mario Strikers. Despite it carving out its own niche, the timing of Omega Strikers' launch was unfortunate. Omega Strikers launched right when fatigue for the live-service model was at its worst for gamers, with Odyssey's game being unable to stand out among bigger properties in the space. Updates for Omega Strikers eventually slowed down, with its final character being added in October 2023. Odyssey is taking the Omega Strikers property and retooling it into Byte Breakers, a new Super Smash Bros.-esque title with most of the same cast.

The Original Super Smash Bros Almost Had a Different Pokemon Fighter

Super Smash Bros. 64 gave players two Pokemon to play as, but one of them almost didn't make the cut in favor of another Pocket Monster.

Odyssey first revealed Byte Breakers on September 11, with a public playtest opened on Steam on September 12. It features the same platform fighter gameplay of the Super Smash Bros. Series, where players have to stay atop the platforms and survive being knocked off. The key difference is its incorporation of the battle royale genre, where it can support up to 40 players at once. Players have to be the last team standing, utilizing a variety of items, team assists, and power-ups that can spawn during a match.

Byte Breakers is an Omega Strikers Battle Royale Meets Super Smash Bros.

Various characters from Omega Strikers are present in the roster of Byte Breakers, such as Nao, Ai. Mi, Juliette, and Luna, just to name a few. The developers of Byte Breakers note that this is a very early prototype and playtest version of the game. Players are invited to try it out as it is right now, in order to get as much feedback as possible and to see if Byte Breakers is on the "right" track for them.

Byte Breakers Playtest Schedule (September 12-16):

  • Servers turn on at 9am PT (12pm EST) each day and turn off at 3am PT (6am EST) each morning.
  • Ends 3am PT Monday

Byte Breakers is running its open playtest to anyone on Steam, with its servers being turned on at 9 am PT and turned off at 3 am PT each morning. The playtest will run throughout the weekend, from September 12-16, 2024. As such, no release date has been set for Odyssey's newest title just yet. Time will tell if Byte Breakers can make a name for itself among the other Super Smash Bros.-esque games out right now.
