The July 26 1.11 update for RGG Studio's Switch platformer removed a bug causing a stutter to appear between every six frames generated in Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble's Adventure Mode. It also fixed a problem that resulted in camera positions moving following restarts, resolved a bug that prevented players from being able to access menus while paused, and addressed an issue causing players to have inconsistent clear times in Adventure Mode due to controller inputs.

While previous Super Monkey Ball titles offered local co-op and a single-player campaign, Banana Rumble shipped with online co-op for its Adventure Mode due to it being a highly requested feature, according to the game's director Daisuke Takahata. This and other newly introduced elements like the Spin Dash move were added to signal to the world that the Super Monkey Ball franchise had evolved, according to producer Nobuhiro Suzuki.

Discussing the development of Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble in an interview with The Best War Games, Suzuki revealed that the newest game in the franchise was designed to inherit the good qualities of its predecessors. However, he added that the title also aimed to provide players with a fresh experience by introducing 16-player multiplayer battles, a more refined style, and new characters, among other additions. Banana Rumble marked the debut of five new characters in the series: Easel, Fes, Palette, Tee, and Val.

Several DLC characters from other Sega properties have been added to Banana Rumble since it was released, including Axel from the Crazy Taxi series, Jet Set Radio's Beat, and the titular protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. The characters are part of the Sega Pass for Super Monkey Ball Banana Rumble which also includes cosmetic items.
