More details about The Super Mario Galaxy Movie were revealed during a new Nintendo Direct, including an updated release date of April 1. Beyond the news that the movie would be arriving slightly sooner than expected, Nintendo shared first looks at some new characters for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie via a trailer.
Given the incredible success of the original The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the hype for the sequel has been unsurprisingly high. The first movie, as part of the partnership between Illumination and Nintendo, earned over $1.36 billion, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie seems poised to rival that success. Back in November, Nintendo shared the first full trailer for the film and revealed Benny Safdie and Brie Larson would be voicing Bowser Jr. And Rosalina, respectively. With the movie only a few months from release, a new look at the animated adventure has been shared.
Super Mario Galaxy Movie Trailer Reveals First Look at Yoshi
This new sneak peek came as part of a special The Super Mario Galaxy Movie-themed Nintendo Direct on January 25. Notably, the presentation revealed that the film would be released on April 1 in the US and some other major markets. For context, the movie was originally expected to be released on April 3, meaning fans will be able to see the film earlier than expected. Besides the release date change, Nintendo shared a new trailer for the movie that revealed official looks at Yoshi, Birdo, Mouser, Lakitu, Baby Mario, and Baby Luigi.
The trailer began with Mario and Luigi biking across a desert to visit what was seemingly Tostarena from Super Mario Odyssey. Once there, they were tasked with fixing a plumbing issue inside the Inverted Pyramid, meeting Yoshi in the process. The trailer confirmed the design of the green dinosaur, which had been leaked months earlier. While Yoshi starts off timid, he looks to become part of the gang later on.
Beyond the Yoshi reveal, the new trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie unveiled Birdo and Mouser, two characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 on the NES. Their roles are still somewhat unclear as they are only briefly shown in the trailer. However, Birdo appeared antagonistic, fighting Peach by launching eggs at her. In another shot, Lakitu could be seen attacking Mario, Luigi, and Yoshi before they escaped down a pipe. Baby Mario and Baby Luigi were also briefly shown.
While the next Mario movie is taking big inspiration from the Super Mario Galaxy games, this latest trailer shows the creators are drawing from Super Mario Odyssey as well. Besides the Sand Kingdom, with its Tostarena town and inverted Pyramid, the trailer revealed a giant T.rex, which looks reminiscent of the one seen in the Cascade Kingdom. It is also worth noting that the trailer showed Luigi wearing a frog suit from Super Mario Bros. 3 to take out a giant Cheep Cheep.
Unfortunately, Nintendo did not reveal more footage of Bowser Jr. And Rosalina, two of the new main characters in the film. However, Illumination’s Chris Meledandri shared a production update, revealing that animation had been “fully completed” on the project. The movie is now in the post-production phase, with Meledandri noting that the teams are focused on sound design and music. Notably, composer Brian Tyler is working on composing the score, which will feature themes from the Super Mario Galaxy games, with a 70-piece orchestra.
It will be interesting to see what else about The Super Mario Galaxy is revealed leading up to its release. Fortunately, April 1 is just over two months away, so fans do not have much longer to wait until they can see the film in the theaters.
