The Super Mario Bros. Wonder Nintendo Direct presentation highlighted some of the new power-ups that players will be able to use on their journey. It also explained how the new game takes place in the Flower Kingdom, as opposed to the Mushroom Kingdom, and therefore has some unique enemy types and other characters for players to interact with. This includes talking flowers that players will be able to come across as they traverse Super Mario Bros. Wonder's various stages.
The talking flowers in Super Mario Bros. Wonder make jokes and sometimes offer gameplay hints. Main series Super Mario games aren't exactly known for their extensive voice acting, and so it's safe to say that some fans may not care to listen to the flowers talk. Luckily, it's been confirmed that Super Mario fans can simply mute the talking flowers through the game's settings. They are also able to change the language that the talking flowers speak if they'd rather do that instead.
The talking flowers are just one of the new elements featured in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The recent Nintendo Direct shone a spotlight on all the new features that fans can look forward to in the game, with one of the most significant being the new Wonder Flowers. By collecting Wonder Flowers, Super Mario Bros. Wonder players can trigger Wonder Effects, which drastically change the level in various ways. Examples shown include bringing pipes to life and transforming Mario into a goomba.
Completing a Wonder Flower section gets players a Wonder Seed, another new concept being introduced in Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Wonder Seeds are necessary to unlock new courses in the game. They are collected by completing Wonder Flower sections, but also by getting to the end of other courses. Players should think of them as the Power Star-equivalent for Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
It's clear that Super Mario Bros. Wonder is making a lot of changes to the standard 2D Super Mario formula, and it's likely that it has even more secrets that Super Mario fans will have to discover for themselves by playing the game when it launches next month. Unless Nintendo drops more trailers in the interim that will offer more revelations about the game, of course.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder launches October 20, exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
