A talented Nintendo fan has created a custom box art image for the upcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder in the style of the old Super NES games. 2023 has been a rather exciting year for Mario fans so far, with the animated Super Mario Bros. Movie possibly paving the way for future Nintendo film adaptations with its blockbuster success this spring and several new Super Mario games being announced during June’s Nintendo Direct.

One of the most notable reveals was Super Mario Bros. Wonder, a brand-new 2D platformer that is coming to the Switch in October. Last week’s trailer highlighted the game’s four-player co-op play and colorful landscapes, and players will finally get to control the spunky Princess Daisy for the first time in a mainline Super Mario title. Super Mario Bros. Wonder will also give Mario a new elephant form that is already generating plenty of fan art online. Even as some fans worry that longtime Mario voice actor Charles Martinet has been replaced in Super Mario Bros. Wonder, excitement for the next 2D Mario adventure remains high.

A Reddit user by the handle of Sr_Pozo recently posted their own custom box art for the game on r/Mario. Drawn in the style of Super NES titles like 1993’s Super Mario All-Stars, this colorful and retro-inspired artwork features Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy, and Toad as they embark on their latest platforming adventure. Many of Super Mario Bros. Wonder’s new power-ups are also on display, such as the aforementioned Elephant Mario, Luigi’s enlarged hat that seemingly functions as a parachute, and the Wonder Flower that can alter the world around the heroes in helpful ways.

As mentioned before, Super Mario Bros. Wonder is but one game in a power-packed line-up of promising Mario games set to release over the coming year or so. The same Nintendo Direct that gave fans their first look at Super Mario Bros. Wonder also revealed a new WarioWare micro-game collection, a long-hoped-for remake of the classic Super Mario RPG, and even a new spin-off game starring Princess Peach.

These are all pretty exciting releases for Super Mario fans, and Super Mario Bros. Wonder looks to spearhead this new wave of games by giving players some classic 2D Mario gameplay with a few new twists and power-ups. In this spirit, Sr_Pozo’s SNES-inspired Super Mario Bros. Wonder box art nicely captures the illustrated charm of Mario’s early 90s adventures while highlighting the new tricks the beloved plumber will bring to his next trek through the Mushroom Kingdom.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder will be released on October 20, 2023 for the Nintendo Switch.
