There’s no chance Mario would miss The Game Awards, which is probably why Keegan-Michael Key dropped by to present a clip from The Super Mario Bros. Movie featuring the Mushroom Kingdom and a lot of Toads.
The new Mario clip became the third preview for the movie after Nintendo previously dropped the two teasers via exclusive Nintendo Directs, although some extra footage from TV ads abroad and even Twitch-exclusive clips have made their way online. All that, combined with some thorough looks from die-hard Mario fans on official posters and even some leaked marketing material from Japan, already offer a sufficient look at the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which so far has won over audiences.
Key has been one of the voice actors most heavily featured in the Super Mario Bros. Movie trailers. His comedic talents give Toad a very humorous and loud personality that most fans approve of. Unsurprisingly, The Game Awards clip puts the spotlight on Toad and Mario, with the latter having a difficult time adjusting to all the platforming the Mushroom Kingdom has to offer. Some minor scenes were previously included in the shorter ads for the film.
Some elements, such as the clear pipes and coin blocks, had already been featured in other Super Mario Bros. Movie teasers. However, the sight of an antique shop full of vintage Mario power-ups perfectly illustrates the kind of Super Mario Bros. Easter eggs fans should expect to see in the movie. Nevertheless, the real treat here is seeing Mario stumble his way across the several lifts platforms and dangerous blocks placed all over the Mushroom Kingdom as the two make their way to Princess Peach's castle.
Judging from what Nintendo has shown so far, Mario and Luigi both inhabit a different world where their plumbing skills are handier than in the Mushroom Kingdom, but somehow they’ll be transported to their more well-known surroundings where Bowser kidnaps Luigi. Putting that aside, it seems Peach and Mario will join forces to rescue Luigi and prevent Bowser from hoarding all the power of the stars, perhaps even calling for some intervention from Super Mario Galaxy's other protagonist.
Even if The Super Mario Bros. Movie is not due to come out until spring next year, Nintendo and Illumination have done a great job at marketing the film, with plenty more likely to come in the next few months. Nintendo's other two appearances at The Game Awards were Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon and Fire Emblem Engage's DLC content.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is scheduled to be released on April 7, 2023.
