Publisher Konami has said that the commercial performance of Suikoden 1 & 2 HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is "extremely strong." Released in March 2025 on Switch, PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S, the Suikoden HD Remaster brings enhanced versions of the classic PS1 JRPGs Suikoden and Suikoden 2 to modern platforms.
In an age when developing a new original game takes longer and costs more, remakes and remasters of older titles are increasingly finding a place filling out the catalogs of new consoles. And while players often joke or complain about publishers and developers returning to the well, it's paying off in terms of commercial success. For example, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered is already breaking sales records for 2025 despite being less than a month old. As it turns out, many older players seem to relish the chance to reconnect with a game they loved before in a new context, while newer players welcome the ability to play classics they missed on newer platforms or with enhanced features.
Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Review
Konami Digital Entertainment's Suikoden I&II HD Remaster is light on updates, but it still delivers two of the greatest RPG experiences of all time.
That seems to be the case with Suikoden HD Remaster, judging by comments from Konami Suikoden IP Producer Rui Naito. Speaking during the Suikoden Live Broadcast stream event on May 15, 2025, Naito called sales figures for the games "extremely strong," and expressed hope to share "even more good news" in the future. In fact, the game may even get another bump in sales, as Suikoden HD Remaster is a confirmed launch day title for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 hardware.
Suikoden HD Remaster Sales Are Extremely Strong According to Konami
Naito wasn't specific about the actual sales numbers of the Suikoden HD Remaster project, but Naito confirmed that the release has done well both in Japan and internationally, noting that Suikoden Live Broadcast events drew viewers from across the world to hear news about the game. Fans regard Suikoden 2 as one of the best PS1 narratives of all time, and positive reviews of the game's enhanced performance and improved localization likely helped fuel the growing enthusiasm.
The broadcast also included other Suikoden developments, including a planned stage play adaptation, commentary about the series itself, such as the placement of the Suikoden HD Remaster titles in the series timeline, more news and info about Suikoden Star Leap, the first new Suikoden franchise game since 2006's Suikoden 5 on the PS2. So far Star Leap is destined for mobile platforms like iOS and Android, but does not yet have a release window.
With enthusiasm running high for all things Suikoden in the wake of the success of Suikoden HD Remaster, Konami looks to be leaning in to boost the chances of a true series revival. Time will tell whether these efforts will be successful, but if they are, JRPG fans and those who remember PS1 classics could have a new pillar to rely on for new releases in the future.
