On Tuesday, January 14, Rocksteady Studios and Warner Bros. Games released the final major content update for Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League in the form of Season 4, Episode 8: Balance, just 16 days before the game’s one-year anniversary. Players were able to venture into a medieval Elseworld, seemingly set on Earth 118 from the Dark Knights of Steel series based on towering statues of King Jor-El and Queen Lara Lor-Van. Here, Task Force X managed to defeat Brainiac, putting an end to his multiversal domination, delivering him to Amanda Waller, and rescuing the Justice League. While this may be the end of Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s story, its conclusion could set up compelling narratives for future games.

Why Wonder Woman’s Permanent Fate in Suicide Squad: KTJL May Be a Boon For Monolith

Wonder Woman's story in Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League may have helped give Monolith a clean slate for its own Wonder Woman-led adventure.

The Fate of Suicide Squad’s Heroes and Villains

During the Suicide Squad’s climatic battle against Brainiac, Task Force X managed to liberate the Justice League and consequently revealed that every single prior version of the corrupted heroes have been clones made by Brainiac this entire time. This meant that the Arkhamverse’s iteration of Batman, Superman, Green Lantern John Stewart, and the Flash were never truly killed by the Suicide Squad. After learning about the destruction Brainiac caused throughout the multiverse, the Justice League chose to travel to each of the affected worlds and help fix them and their inhabitants as best they could to atone for their clones’ actions.

Meanwhile, Task Force X returned to their homeworld and had Deadshot’s daughter, Zoe Lawton A.K.A. Lawless, Hack, and Toyman short out their internal microbombs, so the Squad could escape Waller’s clutches. Young Poison Ivy, Penguin, Lawless, Hack, and Toyman join the Squad in escaping A.R.G.U.S. While Mrs. Freeze and Joker presumably return to their homeworlds and Deathstroke returns to operating as a mercenary. As the Suicide Squad flies off to an unknown destination, posters of Lex Luthor from Earth 2 running for Congress can be seen throughout Metropolis near a new statue of Wonder Woman. Before the Squad leaves, however, they drop off A.R.G.U.S. Files to Lois Lane.

New Arkham Story Potential From Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s Ending

Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League’s ending leaves many plot threads unfinished while setting up potential new storylines for new games set in the Arkhamverse. In Suicide Squad’s main campaign, Tim Drake Robin is suggested to have gone after rogue Batman with his lone bloody mask, hinting that the Dark Knight may have killed his ward. It would be interesting to see Batman striving to find Robin and coming to terms with his presumed death. Given that Tim is married to Barbara Gordon in this timeline, Barbara could succumb to grief and fight Batman either as Oracle or a new form of Batgirl, not knowing it was Batman’s clone who killed Tim.

Despite the Justice League’s deaths being retconned as clones’ deaths, Arkhamverse Wonder Woman remains dead by the hands of clone Superman. If Rocksteady or another developer make an eventual Superman game set in the Arkhamverse, they could build on this storyline by having Superman feel immense guilt for Wonder Woman’s death and go into a sort of reclusive state. Only the appearance of a new threat, potentially from Earth 2 Lex Luthor, could spark Superman to overcome his grief and strive to redeem himself by saving the world one final time. Other Superman villains such as Metallo, Parasite, or even Hank Henshaw could use Metropolis’ recent destruction as a way to springboard new villainous machinations.

A New Arkhamverse Justice League Game

Warner Bros. Games could additionally work on a new Justice League game focused on how Superman, Flash, and Green Lantern are striving to rebuild the League stronger than it was before to prevent another Brainiac situation. This game could function similarly to Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy game but instead have players embody other members of the League throughout the game. The Arkhamverse League could recruit Donna Troy, Yara Flor, or Nubia to become the next Wonder Woman alongside entirely new members such as Martian Manhunter, Hawkgirl, and Mister Terrific, especially to coincide with DCU films and shows. While Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League wasn’t universally praised, it could still lead to more interesting games set in the Arkhamverse in the future.

Monolith Productions is already working on a Wonder Woman solo game, but it is not set in the Arkham universe.
