Moats are an essential part of a castle's defense in Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition, forcing enemies to assault through a single choke point. If players have enough time before the enemy attacks, they will want to build a moat all the way around their castle or town. However, while it's easy to lay out a plan for an intended moat, it's not at first clear how to dig a moat in Stronghold Crusader.

How To Lay Out Moats In Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition - Moat Plan

The first step in building a moat is to lay out the plans for it. To do so, go to the building menu and click on the Castle Buildings tab. Then click the gate icon labeled Castle Defenses. On the far right, there is a shovel icon for Dig Moat.

Hold LMB and drag to draw out a plan for the moat. Players can hold Shift to make the moat wider. This will not dig the moat yet.

Go to Options and Controls and tick the Always Show Planned Moat box to make this process easier.

To delete bits you're unhappy with, use the No Moat button depicted by a shovel and a red cross. It's also not possible to build a moat on high ground, so when drawing their plans, players may have gaps.

Placing A Gatehouse & Drawbridge

Stronghold Crusader Definitive Edition - Gatehouse & Drawbridge

Gatehouses cannot be placed close to a moat once it has been dug, so before digging, build your gatehouses. Ideally, a castle wouldn't have too many of these to give the enemy fewer places to attack.

Test all of this out in Free Build and use Cheats for Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition to have no building costs.

Small and Large Stone Gatehouses are found in the same Castle Defenses menu. Place either on a section of your wall, and then from the same menu, place a Drawbridge, allowing your own troops to cross the moat when desired.

Gatehouses can be clicked on to bring up a menu to manually close and open the gate, as well as the Drawbridge if one is attached.

How To Dig Moats In Stronghold Crusader: Definitive Edition

After laying out the plans for a moat, it needs to be dug. This requires men. Players can either recruit Engineers from the Engineer Guild building, or they can recruit normal soldiers from the Barracks, although these can only be recruited if the castle has weapons. Most soldiers can dig, but some exceptions are Crossbowmen, Swordsmen, and Knights. Essentially, the higher-status troops who wouldn't want to get their hands dirty.

Select these men and hover over the moat plan with the cursor, which should now show a shovel. Then Right-click for them to start digging.

The more men you have digging, the faster it will be completed.

The diggers will start where you click, but then keep going all the way round the moat until it's complete. For this reason, start digging in the highest priority place, such as in front of the gatehouse.

It does not appear to be possible to fill a moat in after it's been dug, so make sure you're happy before digging.
