The Street Fighter Movie Just Got A Massive Update

The upcoming live-action Street Fighter movie has just found a new director.

Sources told Deadline that at least four actors are being eyed to be cast in the anticipated Street Fighter movie. Among the names are Aquaman star Jason Momoa, To All the Boys I've Loved Before actor Noah Centineo, Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw star Roman Reigns, and Boy Kills World's Andrew Koji. Momoa is still fresh from the phenomenal box office success of another video game live-action adaptation – A Minecraft Movie, which was produced by Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures. The outlet, however, noted that the studio reps declined to comment on the rumored casting. Thus, one still needs to take it with a grain of salt until they officially confirm the casting.

Getting The Casting Right For A New Street Fighter Will Be Paramount To The Film's Success

In March, Sony removed Street Fighter from its 2026 theatrical release calendar. The anticipated movie was initially set to hit theaters on March 20, 2026. The move raised eyebrows and raised concerns that the reboot would not see the light of day. So, the report about the rumored casting is a good sign that the project is still on their radar. Before the changes in Sony's calendar, the project finally found its director. In February, Capcom and Legendary Pictures decided to work with Kitao Sakurai for the project. Sakurai is known for helming The Eric André Show and Netflix's comedy-drama Bad Trip. Prior to Sakurai taking on the job, Danny and Michael Philippou were initially attached to direct the movie. However, they left the project in mid-2024. With a director and some actors rumored to join the film, chances are high that fans are getting another Street Fighter movie, perhaps by 2027 at the earliest.

Momoa, Centineo, Reigns, and Koji possibly joining the Street Fighter live-action is exciting. Momoa could play the King of Muay-Thai Sagat with his intimidating presence and muscular build. Sagat is a recurring major character from the game, which suits Momoa's star power. Centineo could play Ken Masters because his energy fits Ken's playful and cocky nature. However, the young actor is versatile, so he could also portray Cody, a street fighter-turned-prisoner. Cody is good-natured with a sense of justice. However, he could be reckless, too. Meanwhile, WWE superstar Reigns can use his real-life experience and portray the powerful Russian wrestler Zangief. He has the size and background to bring authenticity to Zangief's powerful moves. Lastly, Koji can potentially play one of the favorites and the main protagonist, Ryu. The British actor and martial artist has the skill and mindset to portray Ryu's philosophy and inner struggle. All four could form a strong ensemble for the upcoming Street Fighter movie. Each has unique charisma, humor, and discipline that could appeal to general audiences and gaming fans.
