Stranger Things season 5 is one of the most anticipated TV releases of 2025, and even though the wait is on for events to really heat up when the series returns to Netflix to turn everything upside down (literally), fans are predicting one big occurrence that will see Will Byers' powerful secret abilities finally be exposed. Netflix announced that production wrapped on Stranger Things in late December 2024, and although there isn't an exact release date for its final season as yet, the Duffer brothers revealed that they are ahead of schedule, which is a massive relief for eager fans.

The question on everyone's lips is, who will survive Stranger Things season 5? For now, this mystery will be revealed when the series returns, but some characters could meet their end more than others, like Hopper (David Harbour), Joyce (Winona Ryder), or Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), which will no doubt tear the hearts out of its viewers. However, Stranger Things' body count isn’t the only mystery that season 5 will expose. As fans conjure up theories about what's to come for their favorite characters, it seems as though Will's darkest and most powerful secrets are a popular choice among viewers who think that the character's true identity will finally be brought to the surface once and for all.

Stranger Things Fans Think Will Has a Powerful Secret He Isn’t Aware Of

Will Byers hasn't had the easiest of times in Stranger Things. The shy and artistic kid who loves nothing more than to play Dungeons & Dragons with his three best friends, Mike, Lucas and Dustin, has been through hell and back since season one. Not only did he get himself sucked into the Upside Down and become the demogorgon's prime target, but he also became possessed by the Mind Flayer during season 2. Now, according to Stranger Things fans on Reddit, season 5 for Will is likely to get so much worse.

It's fairly obvious that Will is special in some capacity and his mysterious connection to the Upside Down has been a talking point among viewers. The final scene of Season 4 saw Will touching his neck, as he was able to sense that Vecna was still alive and lurking somewhere near. It's known that the character will be important during the final season, and many have been coming up with theories about his powers. "We’ve never seen him talk about his time in the Upside Down, and we know from officially released BTS photos that we are getting flashbacks to his time there," said one user, with another adding that they think Will has "a chip in the back of his neck preventing him and his true sight is leaking out", which could be exposed in season 5.

"The soteria part is really interesting! They really could’ve chipped him. Maybe it was them being afraid that he could cause chaos if his powers were to be unleashed."

Another Stranger Things fan suggested that Will could be a test subject from Hawkins National Laboratory, where Eleven was kept, but that no one has seen his true abilities as yet, as he could be more powerful than Eleven and "completely aware of them himself because they are more on the subtle side for now" due to the chip. Of course, these are just theories, and fun ones at that, but it does stand to reason that Will might be the key to bringing Vecna to his knees for good and unleashing his ultimate final power move.

Season 5 of Stranger Things is slated to come out on Netflix at some stage this year.
