This post contains SPOILERS for Stranger Things Season 5 Vol. 1

Vecna, or Henry Creel, was defeated by Eleven in the fourth season of Stranger Things. However, he still won the battle by almost breaking the barrier between the Upside Down and the real world. Since then, Hawkins has been isolated from the rest of the world because no one wants this curse to spread anywhere else.

The military has been doing everything to study the Upside Down, and at the same time, Eleven and the gang want to kill Vecna once and for all. And after a lot of waiting, Vecna does come out of the shadows, and he sort of overwhelms everyone with his powers. On top of that, he comes face-to-face with his first victim, Will. At that point, a lot of fans might have thought that it was over for Will. But while Vecna kills almost everyone else around him, he spares Will. But the question is, why exactly doesn't he kill Will? Well, believe it or not, the answer is quite simple.

Vecna Doesn't Kill Will Byers Because He Considers The Boy "Weak"

Yes, It was Vecna's Biggest Mistake In Stranger Things Season 5

When Vecna comes face-to-face with Will, he reveals something important. Vecna explains why exactly he chose Will as his first victim. The answer is quite simple (and heartbreaking); he considered Will weak. Vecna thinks so lowly of Mike that he doesn't even think that killing the boy is important. Instead, he releases Demogorgons to kill Will's mother and his friends right in front of him. He wanted Will to witness their deaths, knowing that he couldn't do anything. Yeah, it doesn't go like that, but still, that was Vecna's way to ridicule Will even further.

Even Matt Duffer confirmed this in an interview with Variety. When asked why Vecna didn't "kill or kidnap" Will in Season 5 of Stranger Things, Matt says that Vecna "completely underestimates Will." He goes on to say:

He perceives him in the way that so many others have in his life, which is as weak, as nothing, as incapable of achieving anything great. So he completely underestimates him in that moment.

According to Vecna, Will was the easiest to break emotionally and mentally. And of course, others (and us!) Always saw Will as a character who's always scared. Of course, the boy went through torture in the Upside Down, so it's understandable why he is terrified of Vecna and the Upside Down. But more than that, this fear stems from Will's inability to accept who he actually is.

Will likes Mike, and it's evident from the very beginning. But forget about confessing his feelings, the boy can't even accept that he feels something for Mike. He constantly questions his feelings, and this very thing makes him less confident around his friends. Vecna knows this very well, and he uses it to break Will.

And you, Will, you were the first. You broke so easily. You showed me what was possible, what I could achieve. - Vecna to Will

Fortunately, though, Will decides to let go of his weakness in the most crucial moment in Season 5. Will remembers what Robin said to him, that he should look for answers within himself and not in someone else (in this case, Mike). So when Vecna leaves and releases his monsters, Will finally breaks free and finds the confidence and strength to use the Hive Mind to his advantage. He kills the Demogorgons in a very Vecna-like fashion, which is quite brilliant, to be honest. He doesn't simply defeat the monsters; he defeats them using Vecna's powers. That's quite a strong response from Will after getting trash-talked by the monster.

Honestly, it would be amazing to see Vecna's reaction to Will's power-up. The boy he once considered weak will now stand strong against him, along with Eleven, Eight, and everyone else, of course. But we'll have to wait for the release of Season 5 Volume 2 to see this finally happen in Stranger Things.
