  • Fans can anticipate Season 5's release on Netflix this year.

Stranger Things Season 5 is one of Netflix’s most anticipated shows, and this time around, it's changing a longstanding tradition when it comes to its episodes. Thankfully, the wait won't be too much longer for fans as the beloved sci-fi series will be returning to make its final outing this year. The fifth installment looks set to be the show's most emotional and tragic season yet, and fans have already been trying to guess when Season 5 will be released, with some thinking that a summer premiere date would be ideal, but others sadly believe that fall seems a more likely timeframe.

Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, Stranger Things tells the story of Millie Bobby Brown's Eleven and her friends in Hawkins, Indiana, as they take on the sinister forces of the Upside Down. Netflix announced that production wrapped on Stranger Things season 5 in late December 2024, and although there isn't an exact release date for its final season, the Duffer brothers revealed that they are ahead of schedule, which is a massive relief for impatient fans. Now, nine years after it welcomed viewers into its horror-infested universe in 2016, fans will finally see how Stranger Things' very last season will pan out for its beloved main characters.

Shawn Levy Won’t Be Directing All of Stranger Things’ Episodes

David Harbour and Winona Ryder in Stranger Things

As reported by Screen Rant, director Shawn Levy won't be involved in as many episodes in Stranger Things season 5 as he has been in the series' previous installments. Canadian filmmaker Levy, who fans will know for the Night at the Museum franchise, the Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See, and Deadpool & Wolverine, has directed episodes 3 and 4 of every season of Stranger Things ever since it released, but now, that won't be the case for Levy as episode 3 of the returning show, titled "The Turnbow Trap," will see Frank Darabont (screenwriter on A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors, The Blob, and The Fly 2) will take the directors chair, with episode 4, titled "Sorcerer," directed by the Duffer Brothers.

For fans who enjoy Levy's directing, he will be back to helm one episode of Stranger Things season 5, although, as yet, it's unconfirmed which one he'll be putting his stamp on, but it's likely that he'll be involved in either episode 6, "Escape from Camazotz," or episode 7, "The Bridge," as right now, there isn't a director attached to those. To ramp up even more excitement for its final outing, Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, recently gave a little insight into what fans can expect from Season 5's ending. "People are going to be truly devastated," teased Schnapp. "As sad as it was, I'm so excited to see the world's reaction to watching the finale because there's not going to be a dry eye; it's going to be sad. Not to be so negative, it is a really great season and people will love it."

Season 5 of Stranger Things is slated to come out on Netflix at some point this year.
