Walt Disney Animation Studios now presents a journey “past space and time to a place of infinite mystery” in its upcoming animated film titled Strange World.

The mystical journey of Disney's Strange World comes from Don Hall (Big Hero 6, Raya and the Last Dragon) and Qui Nguyen (Raya and the Last Dragon). Strange World's official synopsis describes the upcoming film to be, “An original action-adventure journeys deep into an uncharted and treacherous land where fantastical creatures await the legendary Clades, a family of explorers whose differences threaten to topple their latest — and by far — most crucial mission.”

The first trailer for Strange World, which is set to be released in November 2022, depicts a brief glimpse of what's to come in the movie. It also manages to pay its respects to retro sci-fi flicks, with some of this inspiration even being used on the film’s official poster. The film's director Hall even stated that Strange World is deeply inspired by pulp science fiction magazine covers of past iconic decades like the '30s, '40s, and '50s, which are the same magazines that inspired the creation of the Star Wars franchise.

Strange World tells the story of a chaotic family of explorers, who find themselves on their most treacherous and gruesome journey yet. In the trailer, they explore a colorful and quirky-looking planet while encountering all the roadblocks and creatures that reside on it. Searcher Clade, voiced by Jake Gyllenhaal, is revealed to be the son of a famous explorer, however, he calls himself a farmer instead of owning who he is and doesn’t seem to be too ecstatic about playing a part in the adventurous mission.

With this just being the first look at what's to come with Strange World, it's clear that the film is different from anything the Walt Disney Animation Studios has released in the past decade. The film is not only an ode to the past, but it also seems to put its own spin on the iconic pulp science fiction elements it brings to the table — making everything it uses its own in a strange way.

Despite the unknown, all will soon be revealed as Walt Disney Animation Studios teases more of what's to come down the road and when Strange World is officially released to the world.

Strange World will be released in theaters on November 23, 2022.
