The next Avengers movies are no longer in limbo as the creative team is already complete and ready to move forward with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. Stephen McFeely has been tapped to pen the next two Avengers movies.
Writing partners McFeely and Christopher Markus are among Hollywood's most famous screenwriters and producers. The tandem gained worldwide recognition for their works, like The Chronicles of Narnia, the first three Captain America (The First Avengers, The Winter Soldier, and Civil War) movies starring Chris Evans, and Thor: The Dark World. The duo was also behind the hit Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Marvel fans have been waiting for the next Avengers after several members of the creative team left, but it has now been confirmed that one of the duo, McFeely, is coming back for Avengers 5 and 6.
Steven Yeun Leaving Thunderbolts is Another Blow to Marvel
Steven Yeun wants to do a Marvel movie, but he's dropped out from Thunderbolts.
Marvel made several huge announcements at the San Diego Comic-Con panel. It officially announced the return of the Russo Brothers to direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. An official press release from the Russo Brothers' production company AGBO also confirmed that McFeely would pen Avengers 5 and 6. His writing partner, Markus, wasn't mentioned in the press release, suggesting that he would be working on the job alone. Markus and McFeely have been writing partners since 2004. McFeely co-wrote all his previous entries for Marvel with Markus.
A week before the San Diego Comic-Con, there were rumors that either McFeely or Markus would return to write the next Avengers movies. On July 18's episode of John Rocha's The Hot Mic, Jeff Sneider, an award-winning entertainment reporter and insider, joined Rocha and discussed the Avengers movies. Rocha mentioned screenwriter Michael Waldron reportedly leaving Avengers 5. He asked if there were chances that Marvel would get Markus and McFeely back to write the next Avengers movie. Sneider gave an affirmative response but said either of the two, but not both, would return for Avengers 6. He said, "Yes, I'm told that one of them is coming back to do Avengers 6 and I'm not sure which one. I'm not sure the team is coming back to write Avengers 6. Okay, but one of Markus or McFeely is coming back." During the interview, he added that his insider texted him that Markus and McFeely had already heard the news that one of them was coming back. As to why only one of the duo would return, Sneider shared his speculation. He claimed, "The other one could be dealing with the family thing, you never know, [or] medical thing, who knows. And I think that happens more often than people think."
MCU movies were a hit in previous years, and it wasn't a secret that it seemed to lose its footing after Avengers: Endgame, which involved the departure of some of the most famous Avengers, like Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, and Chris Evans' Steve Rogers aka Captain America. The Marvels starring Brie Larson, released in 2023, made history for its record-low box office for the MCU. Due to the poor performances of the Marvel movies in Phase Four, there were rumors that three MCU franchises would not get the anticipated sequels. Eternals 2, Ant-Man 4 and Captain Marvel 3 might not see the light of day. Marvel wants to regain momentum and the return of the Russo Brothers, McFeely and Downey Jr. (As Doctor Doom, not Iron Man) in Avengers 5 and Avengers 6 is a comforting move, considering their contribution to the success of the previous MCU movies. While their names are synonymous with Marvel, their return does not guarantee success, but they are likely to make the next Avengers another hit, considering their previous accomplishments as a team.
Avengers: Doomsday will hit theaters on May 1, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars will follow a year later on May 7, 2027.
