Fans of old-school survival horror games have another new retro-inspired experience to look forward to, with Echograph blending the iconic camera mechanics of Fatal Frame with the atmospheric design and tension-building elements of Resident Evil. Set to launch exclusively for PC via Steam, Echograph is understandably earning positive early comparisons to the original Resident Evil game and the terrifying Fatal Frame franchise, thanks to an official trailer that hearkens back to the early years of survival horror.
A number of games like Resident Evil and Fatal Frame have caught the eye of horror gaming fans over the years, yet the two juggernaut IPs have remained in a league of their own. While Fatal Frame is beloved for its use of Japanese culture and history with a unique ghost-fighting camera, Resident Evil set the stage for classic survival horror tropes, the likes of which are prominently featured in the upcoming Echograph.
New Horror Game is Resident Evil Meets Parasite Eve, and You Can Play It Soon
An upcoming independent horror title looks to be a perfect love letter to Resident Evil, Parasite Eve, and other classic PlayStation 1 games.
Echograph is Like Resident Evil Meets Fatal Frame
Developed and self-published by Pappy's Pipe Dream, Echograph transports players to a decaying manor where they must uncover the truth of what really happened on the night of a tragic incident that killed protagonist Layla's entire family. Along the way, Layla is haunted by vengeful ghosts that can only be defeated with the use of a special camera. As she fights to survive the horrific fate that claimed the rest of her bloodline, Layla will need to manage limited resources, solve environmental puzzles, find hidden passageways, and survive a battle of grief and generational trauma. Like other retro survival horror games, Echograph features old-school pixelated graphics, fixed camera angles, brutal resource scarcity, and an unforgiving difficulty.
While the majority of Echograph takes place in isometric environments, the first-person ghost encounters, reminiscent of the Fatal Frame game series, add an immersive perspective shift to increase the oppressive tension of the overall horror atmosphere. Layered environmental storytelling, hidden clues, and head-scratching puzzles will add to the challenge of Echograph, with restless spirits and hidden secrets lying in wait to push Layla to her limits. Echograph is available now for wishlisting on Steam.
Dozens of indie horror games on Steam have earned their place in the spotlight in recent years, with hit titles like Mouthwashing, Crow Country, and Heartworm all receiving praise for their old-school horror vibes. Whether Echograph will live up to the powerhouse legacy of its spiritual predecessors remains to be seen, but the implementation of long-adored retro mechanics could play into its favor in the long run
