Whisper Mountain Outbreak, a new co-op Steam game inspired by Resident Evil, will launch in early access on August 11. Resident Evil is one of the most popular and influential video game franchises of all time, so it's really no surprise that many indie games take direct inspiration from it. But while there are many games inspired by Resident Evil, they all tend to put their own spin on the survival-horror concept.
There have been some great Resident Evil-style games released over the last few years. Crow Country managed to capture the essence of classic Resident Evil gameplay and blend it with Final Fantasy 7-style graphics, while Signalis successfully translated classic survival-horror to a sci-fi setting. Now yet another Resident Evil- like game is about to hit the scene, and this one is all about 4-player co-op.
Every Main Resident Evil Game In Release Order
The Resident Evil franchise has been around for decades and is responsible for some of the greatest horror games ever. Here are all the main releases.
Whisper Mountain Outbreak is Co-Op Survival-Horror
Whisper Mountain Outbreak describes itself as "Escape room meets co-op survival horror." Set in 1998, players have to make their way out of Mount Bisik by fighting monsters, finding helpful items, and, just like old-school Resident Evil games, solving puzzles. The game features customizable characters, a Resident Evil-style health system, and unique locations to explore filled with deadly creatures. Based on what's been shown so far, Whisper Mountain Outbreak should be a solid game to play with friends, and it should also greatly appeal to fans of Resident Evil games.
Whisper Mountain Outbreak has some unique features that should help it carve its own niche in the survival-horror space. For example, the game features a class system that gives players unique abilities, in turn opening the door for strategy as players work with their friends. New skills can be earned, and more powerful items can be crafted to give players an edge as well. Since the game is releasing in early access, fans can expect changes to be made over time based on feedback.
According to the Steam page, releasing Whisper Mountain Outbreak as an early access game will allow the team to deliver a more fully-featured experience. The expectation is that Whisper Mountain Outbreak will be in early access for about 12 months, and by the end of it, players can expect "meta progression, more player customization, more story elements, more upgrades, more equipment, more enemies, more scenarios, more mission types and levels." At launch, players can enjoy "8 randomized levels with 3 mission types, 12 weapon types, 6 character classes, 15 player skill upgrades, a crafting system, and customizable character skins."
The 2.5D graphics may not be for everyone, but there's no denying that the game has seriously creepy vibes. If nothing else, Whisper Mountain Outbreak will be something for Resident Evil fans to keep an eye on when it launches in early access on August 11.
