Upcoming Steam game Tombwater is combining elements of Red Dead Redemption 2 and Dark Souls to create a brand-new 2D action RPG experience. Tombwater is the latest title from Ocean's Heart developer Moth Atlas, and interested gamers actually have the opportunity to try it out right now via a free Steam demo.
Tombwater was officially revealed by Moth Atlas in 2024, giving players an initial glimpse at the Wild West Soulslike title for the first time. It instantly caught the eye, combining the difficulty curve and punishing combat of Dark Souls with the Western vibes of Red Dead Redemption. Despite the comparisons between Tombwater and both games, it employs a stylish 2D art style that allows it to flourish as its own thing - this isn't just another indie version of Dark Souls.
Tombwater Gives Serious Dark Souls Vibes, and You Can Try It Right Now
Tombwater is described on Steam by developer Moth Atlas as a "Souls-Like Western full of Eldritch horrors," where players "explore the accursed Wild West town of Tombwater and lay bare the darkness that lies beneath." Gamers can "wield an arsenal of firearms, blades, spells, apothecary items, and cursed charms to protect yourself from a madness taking hold." It even boasts some Metroidvania elements across the interconnected game world, where players can explore optional areas for extra loot and quests. Dark Souls fans will find plenty to love here, with over 20 punishing boss battles to challenge every skill they develop throughout their playthrough. Luckily, players have over 50 weapons and 40 spells at their disposal, giving them plenty of ways to approach every fight.
Combat variety is key in Tombwater. In a brand-new trailer, Moth Atlas has revealed the complete slate of starting classes in Tombwater, with six to choose from, offering "distinct stats, equipment, and tactical advantages, shaping everything from combat damage to how players manage health, resources, and risk." Alongside the new trailer, lead developer Max Mraz commented on how the new classes will affect Tombwater's gameplay. "We wanted each starting class to meaningfully change the way you fight through Tombwater," Mraz said. "The classes offer the chance to mix things up on a replay, with various strengths and starting equipment making a big difference. I default to the Drifter because I love its weapon art, but also enjoy challenging myself to different builds and playthroughs. Except for the Nameless. That's just asking for a tough run."
All Tombwater Classes
- Soldier: The best choice for durability - starts with the highest Strength and Life stats of any class.
- Gunslinger: Designed for high firepower - great for quick kills before the Eldritch horrors can get close.
- Occultist: Can use powerful spells, and has a unique Rune Knife "that reduces inflicted madness when enemies are hit with it."
- Tinkerer: Utilizes consumables to allow adaptability, and "rewards players who thrive on crafting and clever use of resources in high-pressure encounters."
- Spellblade: Great for players who want a classic RPG experience, blending swordplay with magic casting.
- Drifter: Weak equipment and very few skill points. This one's for the Soulslike veterans who thrive on a challenge.
Gamers who like the look of Tombwater can try it out for free. Although the full game has yet to be released, Tombwater released a free demo back in April 2025, and gamers are able to download it right now on Steam. The demo gives players access to selected scenes from the full game and allows them to try out various combat styles to get a sense of the essence of Tombwater.

It feels as though indie games on Steam are entering something of a golden era. New titles from smaller developers are popping up all the time, with creative ideas that seem to take more risks than are being seen in AAA studios nowadays. Gamers are embracing these risks right back, with plenty of Steam indie titles finding big success as positive word of mouth spreads.
