Valve has gifted one lucky Steam user a free copy of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 after they experienced an issue with their Steam Deck that the company could not resolve without an RMA. In a year filled with huge triple-A releases, including the likes of Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, Doom: The Dark Ages, Split Fiction, Monster Hunter Wilds, and many more, Claire Obscur: Expedition 33 shocked gamers around the world and quickly became the highest-rated game on Metacritic in 2025. There are still some heavy hitters still to come, including Death Stranding 2: On The Beach, Borderlands 4, Mafia: The Old Country, and others, but Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has already become a big hit, selling 500,000 copies in just a single day.

Steam User Receives Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 for Free
Although Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the turn-based RPG is still highly sought after by some gamers. So much so, one individual was given the opportunity to receive any Steam game of their choice for free, and they chose Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In a new post on Reddit, user _Reyne recently took to the Steam subreddit to praise the platform's support team. The user explains that they faced an issue with their Steam Deck that was ultimately unresolvable, so it was returned to Valve for further investigation. After waiting for "quite a while" for an update, Valve apologized for the delay and noted that its repair partner was experiencing temporary delays. They then offered the user a free game of their choice to apologize for the inconvenience.
When presented with the offer, the user did not hesitate to request the highest-rated game of 2025, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. As shown in the screenshots above, the game was added to the user's Steam library less than 24 hours later. To sweeten the deal even more, the user then received a notification the next day confirming that their Steam Deck was on its way back to them.
Much like the Epic Games Store, Steam often has free games for users to claim. However, it isn't common for Steam Support to offer users a free game of their choice due to a slight inconvenience. The story sparked others to chime in with their experience with the service, with Reddit user Hlidskialf revealing that they once traded twenty Team Fortress 2 keys for a copy of Black Ops 2 or 3 on release, but the trader revoked the payment. "Steam support gave me back my 20 keys and a copy of the game," the user said.
After reports began circulating that a data breach had occurred on the platform, Steam was forced to debunk the claims and revealed that the service did not suffer a data breach. In a new statement, the company said it had examined the leak and determined that there had not been a breach of Steam systems. While the company said it was still investigating the source of the leak, it assured users that personal data was safe.
