Bleak Haven is an upcoming horror FPS on Steam that appears to draw inspiration from the acclaimed Resident Evil Village. Capcom's 2021 survival horror hit is often praised as one of the best in its genre, and Bleak Haven seems to be following in its footsteps, sharing many of the same elements that made Resident Evil Village so successful.

Having sold over 12 million copies since its release, Resident Evil Village has been a major financial success for Capcom, and its strong performance is matched by critical acclaim, with an average score of 84 out of 100 on the review aggregator site OpenCritic. Given its impact, it's no surprise that many games in the genre aim to replicate its formula. One example is Bleak Haven, which is set to release on Steam soon.

Few game franchises match the sheer awe and horror exhibited in the chilling Resident Evil titles, but which games are the scariest?

Bleak Haven Takes Place in an Eerie Village

According to the Steam page for Bleak Haven, the game follows the story of a young man who must explore a dark, uncanny, and remote village in search of his missing brother. During his journey, the protagonist must fight off supernatural beings and sinister creatures that seem to have a lot in common with Resident Evil Village's enemies. He will also need to survive on limited supplies and craft essential tools and weapons from items he finds, a skill that Ethan Winters mastered in the eighth Resident Evil installment. Developed by Hitori De Productions, Bleak Haven is scheduled for release on October 27, but a free playable demo is already available for fans.

Bleak Haven's combat mechanics seem similar to those of Resident Evil Village, as they encourage strategic weapon use and require players to constantly switch between different arms. Developer Hitori De Productions has stated that firearms in the game are limited, forcing players into close-quarters hand-to-hand battles. The game will also feature "finishers" that let the protagonist eliminate nearby weakened enemies with cinematic moves. Fans of Resident Evil Village's puzzles will likely be glad to know that Bleak Haven also includes puzzle-solving elements integrated with its exploration gameplay.

It's important to remember that Bleak Haven is being developed by a small team, so comparisons with a AAA title like Capcom's Resident Evil Village may not be entirely fair. Still, highlighting the similarities in atmosphere and gameplay should hopefully help the right audience discover and enjoy the game. Bleak Haven is also not Hitori De Productions' first project; fans of the studio's style can check out its other horror games on Steam, including Dream Cag e, Supernatural, and Supernormal.
