Cleaning animals in Starsand Island will soon become part of your daily routine, as you need to keep your critters happy if you want them to produce better materials. However, at the start of the game, it's not clear how to do this, so your animals probably have the "Messy" tag, making it harder to raise their happiness.
To quickly help you out, this guide explains exactly how to clean animals in Starsand Island, and what you need to make a brush in Starsand Island.

Which PC game is going to take up the biggest slice of your hard drive? These are. Here are some of the biggest PC games according to their file size.
How to Clean Animals in Starsand Island
To clean animals in Starsand Island, you have to:
- Buy the "Brush" blueprint for 150 Gold at Green Pasture Ranch
- Craft a brush
- Equip the brush and approach an animal that needs cleaning
- Press the required button to clean the animal (left mouse button on PC)
Once you clean an animal, their happiness will immediately go up, and the happier an animal is, the better quality resources they produce. So you'll want to regularly clean your animals (and keep them well-fed) if you want to produce those high-quality materials consistently.
You can only clean an animal if they have the "Messy" label. You'll know they are "Messy" by viewing an animal's stats, or when a brush bubble appears above an animal's head.
Starsand Island Brush Recipe
Here's what you need to craft a Brush in Starsand Island:
- 2 Softwood
- 2 Wool
Softwood is acquired by chopping down small trees like Weeping Figs, or purchasing it from Zerine's General Store with Gold — and you can get Wool from keeping (and feeding) Rabbits in a Rabbit Hutch. If you're opting to purchase Softwood, Zerine's General Store is located on the southwestern side of the main town in Starsand Island, just across the bridge from your starting house.
Once you're ready to make a Brush with these materials, just head to any Worktable. Handily, you don't actually need to have the materials in your inventory to craft anything, as Starsand Island uses materials from both your backpack and Storage Boxes while in the crafting menu.
