After years of anticipation, Bethesda is finally preparing to release the sci-fi RPG Starfield. Fans cannot wait to see what the developer does with this brand-new setting, and the in-depth Starfield Direct has made even some skeptics excited about the potential. It seems like it could be one of the most expansive sci-fi titles of all time, and it will be interesting to see how far the studio will take it. While fans are anxiously waiting for Starfield, it is not the only sci-fi game looming on the horizon.

Ubisoft has officially unveiled the next major Star Wars title, and it seems to have almost everything fans of the franchise could want. Star Wars Outlaws will allegedly be the first fully open-world Star Wars game, and the brief gameplay preview looked promising. It also made some people draw comparisons to Bethesda's upcoming RPG, but these games are not really competing for the same audience.

Starfield and Star Wars Outlaws Are Not Really Competing

Starfield will be whisking players away on a brand-new journey throughout the galaxy. It will take all the hallmarks of a classic Bethesda RPG and expand upon them in exciting ways. Players will have virtually limitless freedom to be who they want to be within this galaxy. They will have full control over their character's look, their ship, their actions, and everything in between. It seems like it will be the biggest AAA RPG the industry has ever seen, and hopefully the studio can actually deliver on that promise.

Star Wars Outlaws will be bringing players on a brand-new adventure in the Star Wars galaxy. It will put them in the shoes of scoundrel Kay Vess as she shoots her way across multiple planets. It looks like a typical open-world action-adventure title with a Star Wars twist and will be canon to the rest of the franchise. While players do not have control over the specifics of their character, they will be given immense freedom in how they navigate the open world. The preview looked exciting, and hopefully Ubisoft can keep that momentum up over the next year.

Star Wars Outlaws and Starfield may both be sci-fi open-world games, but they are vastly different concepts. Starfield is an expansive Bethesda RPG that will likely have countless hours of content to explore while Star Wars Outlaws will be an open-world action-adventure title set within the Star Wars galaxy. These genres are very different from each other and require unique gameplay mechanics. Thie games will be quite different and will only be connected by their sci-fi settings and open world styles.

Since Star Wars Outlaws and Starfield are going to be different genres, they will also be going for different audiences. Starfield is trying to capture that RPG audience that wants to sink months into a game and tell their own story, while Star Wars Outlaws is going for Star Wars fans and those that want a quicker adventure. There may be some crossover between the two, but one will likely not take players away from the other, especially since they're coming out a year apart.

It feels like an exciting time to be a sci-fi fan as so many different titles are on the way. Not only do players have Star Wars Outlaws and Starfield to look forward to, but they also have a plethora of other Star Wars titles plus games like The Outer Worlds 2, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, and Mass Effect 4 on the horizon. That is a lot of content, and there is no reason these titles will have to compete for players' attentions. All these games can coexist, and sci-fi players can be engrossed in unique galaxies for years to come.

Starfield launches September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S.
