Starfield: Shattered Space has players helping the various factions in House Va'ruun, letting you pick which one you help first. Exhuming The Past may be one of the first or last missions in the DLC because of this, though it offers great insight into the origins of what the DLC is about.

While a lot of this quest is straightforward, it does end with a decision that seems to have some weight to it depending on how much you care about the people of House Va'ruun. Here is how to complete the quest along with the results of both decisions at the end of the quest.

Starfield: Best Ship Structural And How To Get Them

It’s important to know where the best Structurals are in order to design the best Ships in Starfield.

How To Complete Exhuming The Past In Shattered Space

The quest officially begins when you travel to Ma'Leen Dam, found just southeast of Dazra. After reaching the Dam and interacting with the ID Card Reader, you'll be unable to access the dam until you get a key card. Comrak Abbas, a kid from the nearby town, will be nearby and point you in the direction of the one in town who can give you the key card as long as you can Persuade him.

Once inside the dam, there will be no enemies and the marker helps make the linear path easy to navigate. Once you reach the Sub Pump Control computer you'll find the recurring puzzle of the dam. To power the Sub Pump Control, exit the room back onto the platform you came from and look along the western wall to see a power module you need to shoot and destroy to activate the controls and progress further.

In the next few rooms you'll continue to talk with a Vortex Phantom named Karija Ma'leen who will ask you to turn back twice before attacking you the third time. Ranged weapons are recommended as Karija will teleport around the room a lot and has a lot of health and melee players will spend a lot of time chasing after the Phantom.

Karija is not killed here or in the next few fights so no need to look for a body to loot.

Exhuming The Past Computer Code In Starfield: Shattered Space

The next room will be the teleportation experiment, which has a code next to the computer that needs to be set to the right power level. Looking at the notes from the previous tests, you'll see a power of 235 was 100 off, meaning the correct code is 335. Complete the teleportation experiment to progress to the next room where Karija and now Vedrasa will attack you.

Misc. Missions in Starfield are a nice and quick way to make some credits and gain a bit of extra XP. Here are some of the best for an XP boost.

Getting The Interlock In Starfield: Shattered Space

To power the Interlock and remove it you'll need to find another power module and destroy it. In the next room with the crates, look up and to the right to see the red emergency cuttable wall. The four pins in the corner can be cut using a melee weapon or mining drill, and doing so will make the door open and lead to the room with the power module which will be along the far back wall. Three Vortex Phantoms will also spawn in the room with you and will need to be taken care of.

Once you destroy the power module, return to the Interlock where it can be removed, though Karija will tell you that removing the second Interlock will flood the village you just visited at the start of the mission.

Should You Take The Other Interlock Or Leave In Starfield: Shattered Space

Choosing to take the other Interlock does not affect the rewards for finishing this quest. The biggest change will be how you escape the dam: taking the interlock leads to an easy path outside, while not taking the extra Interlock will force you to walk back through the entire dam while fighting Vortex Phantoms the entire way. No matter which decision you pick, returning the Interlock(s) to Ekris back at Dazra will reward the player with:

  • 12,000 Credits
  • Exterminator Modified Va'Ruun Penumbra
  • 4 20MM Particle Rockets
  • 350 XP

Choosing to take the other Interlock will require players to open the security door to the left of the first Interlock to destroy the power module and get access to the second module. Taking the second Interlock will add an optional objective for the quest to visit the village and see their lives ruined because of your actions, but this doesn't change anything other than how you feel about your decision and can be skipped. Overall, the choice comes down to how you want your character to act, as there are no lasting impacts.
