Starfield: Shattered Space, the space RPG's first DLC expansion, has launched to mixed reviews on Steam as a plethora of users claim the new storyline is just more of the same. Starfield's new Shattered Space story expansion was released on Xbox Series X/S and PC via Steam on September 30 but currently has less than 600 reviews on the latter with 57% of its reviews being negative.

After finally pulling back the curtain on its very first expansion earlier this year, it was clear that Starfield: Shattered Space was mixing things up and going full-blown horror. The expansion sees players investigate a frightening cosmic threat on a brand-new planet that is filled with unique weapons, spacesuits, gear, and much more. Shattered Space takes place in the homeworld of House Va'ruun and allows players to explore a fully handcrafted location and uncover the mysteries of the Great Serpent.

Despite Bethesda's attempt at hyping up Starfield: Shattered Space, the DLC doesn't appear to have gone over too well with fans. Over on Steam, the story-driven expansion has only managed to draw in a little under 600 reviews in its first 24 hours, and only 43% of its 584 reviews are positive, leaving the highly-anticipated DLC with a mixed rating on the platform. Although different users will have varying reasons for leaving a negative review, the general consensus from players appears to be that Shattered Space doesn't do much to stand apart from its base game and is just more of the same.

Starfield's Shattered Space DLC Receives Mixed Reviews

Starifled is no stranger to review bombs, and while Shattered Space isn't at the center of a review bombing, it is drawing an incredibly mediocre response from the game's community. Steam user Epsilon says that Shattered Space is "just as boring as the main game," before comparing it to Cyberpunk 2077's massively popular DLC, Phantom Liberty. The user explained that Shattered Space lacks great writing, believable characters, and any thoughtful expansion of pre-existing features, which were three vital elements that led to Phantom Liberty's critical acclaim.

There are, however, some positive reviews for Starfield's Shattered Space DLC. Steam user Matty Engs says that the expansion features a more compelling story arch when compared to the main game, while also having visually appealing environments, an engaging new planet, and plenty of classic Bethesda easter eggs to discover. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way, with user Enzevil claiming that the expansion is "not what [they] expected from Bethesda" and that Shattered Space is "more Starfield-like than the base game," citing a lackluster story, writing, characters, and quest design as the reason for their negative review.
