Summary

  • A Microsoft insider confirms Starfield is not in development for PlayStation 5, ending rumors of a potential port for now.
  • Xbox exclusives like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves are set to release on PlayStation, but Starfield will remain Xbox and PC exclusive.
  • The possibility of Starfield going multi-platform in the future remains open, but there are no plans for a PS5 release anytime soon.

A long-time insider has claimed that neither Microsoft nor its subsidiaries are currently working on a PlayStation 5 port for Starfield. The news comes after previous rumors that Starfield may come to PS5 following Xbox's new cross-platform strategy with certain exclusives.

In February, multiple insiders claimed that Starfield would join other Xbox exclusives, like Hi-Fi Rush and Sea of Thieves, in jumping to PlayStation 5 in the near future. While the speculation surrounding the latter two games turned out to be true, Xbox's Phil Spencer stated that Bethesda's Starfield and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would not join the other exclusives in going multi-platform. The same insiders have since walked their Starfield claims back, saying that it was nothing more than an incorrect rumor. While some fans are still hoping for the rumor of a Starfield port to be true and just in its early stages, another insider seems to have supported its inaccuracy.

"I have great sourcing that nobody is working on Starfield for PlayStation right now," said established insider Jez Corden, "Nobody knows what the longer-term future holds, but don't expect it any time soon." While Corden left the possibility open that Starfield could go multi-platform sometime off in the future, he stated that Xbox has no plans to bring the game to PS5 anytime soon. Some may have already expected this to be the case after Starfield didn't join Pentiment, Grounded, Hi-Fi Rush, and Sea of Thieves in being announced for multi-platform releases. However, if true, this claim combined with Spencer's previous comments would solidify the possibility that Starfield will remain an Xbox and PC exclusive for the foreseeable future.

Is Starfield Coming to PlayStation?

  • According to an established insider, no. Microsoft is not working on such a project at this time.

PlayStation fans can still look forward to the release of other Xbox exclusives on Sony's platform, like Hi-Fi Rush on March 19, Grounded on April 16, Sea of Thieves on April 30, and Pentiment, which is already available. It's still unclear when or if another wave of Xbox exclusives going multi-platform could be announced, but it probably won't be anytime in the immediate future.

Other major Xbox exclusives like Gears of War joined Starfield in being rumored for a multi-platform release. This rumor is also entirely unconfirmed and could meet the same fate as the Starfield speculation. But it's certainly not out of the question, especially after Spencer commented on the concept of console exclusivity by saying that it will die out in the coming years.

Recently, Gears of War creator CliffyB shared his thoughts on Xbox's new strategy. He believes that it's ultimately a good thing, as more fans being exposed to a franchise will only help it grow. Xbox's Spencer previously explained that the company is hoping for a similar effect when releasing games like Sea of Thieves for PlayStation and Switch.
