Starfield developer Bethesda has confirmed that it has "exciting things planned" for the game, with the team currently hard at work on future updates. Since its 2023 release, Starfield has seen frequent patches both big and small, but a recent dip in fresh content has many dedicated players of the space adventure RPG hoping that a major update is just around the corner.
As the first new IP by Bethesda Game Studios in over 25 years, expectations were high for Starfield out of the gate, especially after director Todd Howard dubbed the title "Skyrim in space." While many reviews for the game have trended positive when focusing on the title's combat and exploration, Starfield has faced ample player backlash in recent months, as there has been a major lull in new content for players to enjoy. No new updates for the title were announced during the 2025 Xbox Games Showcase in June, and many are now wondering if support for Starfield is beginning to dwindle. This doesn't seem to be the case, however, as the game's developers have made a new comment regarding the RPG's future.
Whatever Happens to Starfield, One Groundbreaking Feature Should Be Carried Forward
Starfield may be facing an uncertain future, but that doesn’t mean that it’s most innovative mechanic should be forgotten about.
Alongside Starfield's July Steam Beta update on PC, which consists largely of bug fixes and performance improvements, the developers promised that support for the game would continue. According to the message, the team is working on future updates, with more information regarding the game's future set to be released "in the coming months." While a second expansion for Starfield has been teased, no official comment has confirmed its existence. Additionally, rumors of a PS5 port persist, though there has been no confirmation.
Starfield Developers Are Reportedly Hard at Work On New Content for the Space RPG
While Bethesda's work on the Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises has cemented it as one of the most beloved studios in the industry, Starfield has seemingly failed to resonate with some gamers. Recently, former Bethesda developer Nate Purkeypile shared his thoughts on why this may be, dubbing Starfield as "too sterile" and sharing his hope that the studio will "return to its roots." Although players are undoubtedly happy that the development team is continuing to support Starfield with bug fixes and improvements, more varied content is at the top of most fans' wishlists.
Earlier this month, a new rumor indicated that while the game has a second DLC expansion in the works, Starfield's highly anticipated new content may have been pushed to 2026. The title's first DLC, Shattered Space, wasn't entirely well-received by the fandom, with many reporting serious bugs and criticising the content for its lack of new features.
