A Starfield player discovered an "Extended Mag Combat Knife" in the game. Like previous Bethesda games, combat is an important part of Starfield. Starfield gives players a nice variety of weapons to fight the various enemies they come across on their adventures. Most of the time, Starfield players will be using guns, but there are situations where they may opt to use a melee weapon against their foes instead.
Starfield doesn't put as much emphasis on melee combat as, say, Skyrim, but it's still a viable option. Generally, most of the melee weapons in the game are knife variations, with Starfield players able to loot all kinds of knives as they explore the cosmos. The higher-tier and rarer knives sometimes come outfitted with special perks, though that doesn't mean all the perks will actually be useful for melee-minded gamers.
Take the Extended Mag Combat Knife found by Reddit user Gutbustero for example. Obviously, Extended Mag is meaningless for a knife because a knife isn't shooting anything and has no ammo to extend. Regardless, the Extended Mag Combat Knife is an Epic-tier weapon and does 16 Physical damage with a 757 value when sold to one of Starfield's merchants, so while the perk is useless, at least the knife is still worth something.
The extended Mag Combat Knife isn't the only weapon with an Extended Mag perk when it doesn't make sense. Another Reddit user, Soggy_Helicopter8589, claims to have found a double barrel shotgun in Starfield that has the Extended Mag perk. Since double barrel shotguns don't have magazines, it doesn't make sense for it to be labeled as "Extended Mag," though it is slightly more logical than having an Extended Mag Combat Knife.
What's unclear is how these bizarre weapons wound up in Starfield. It's possible that they are merely oversights, but it's also possible that a developer put them in the game on purpose as a joke. Another theory is that the weapons were procedurally generated by the game. Starfield utilizes procedural generation for many of the planets that players visit in the game, and so it's possible that technology is also used for the weapons. This could definitely explain why an Extended Mag Combat Knife exists in the game.
Considering just how massive Starfield is, it's possible that there are even weirder weapons in the game that just haven't been discovered yet. Starfield players should keep an eye out for more.
Starfield is out now for PC and Xbox Series X.
