Starfield's Dream Home trait is one of many optional three traits that players can choose when beginning the game. Like other Starfield traits, it has pros and cons while giving players the house of their dreams within the depths of space.

However, when choosing traits in Starfield, many players might wonder what's involved when choosing the Dream Home trait and whether it's worth it. The game also gives players limited information on how to customize their dream home, but fortunately, there is a way to remove the trait if players decide it's not for them.

Where to Find Your Dream Home in Starfield

To visit the Dream Home in Starfield, players must first complete the 'One Small Step' mission. The Dream Home mission shortly becomes available after players first meet Constellation at the Lodge. Players can then set a course to visit the dream home located on the planet Nesoi in the Olympus System using their star map, to the right of Alpha Centauri.

On arriving at Nesoi, scan the planet to reveal and set the landing spot location on the dream home icon, labeled after the name players chose for their character.

The Dream Home is locked when players arrive, so players who want to venture inside must pay an interest-only mortgage payment of 500 credits to open the front door, choosing the menu option to pay when selecting the door. This action grants players one week of access to the house before the next payment is due or until the mortgage gets paid in full to GalBank.

Is the Dream Home Trait Worth It In Starfield?

There are several pros and cons of choosing the Dream Home trait in Starfield:

Pros:

  • Players get instant access to a luxurious home base when first beginning the game and don't have to spend time constructing the overall structure of the building, like when building an Outpost in Starfield. Although pricier than some homes in Starfield, it's cheaper than some properties in places like Neon.
  • It can be fun for players who enjoy lifestyle elements and who want to spend time customizing their space home.
  • The Dream Home trait is quick and easy to remove if players change their minds about having it. If players miss a mortgage payment, they only lose access to the house until they pay rather than lose it entirely.

Cons:

  • It's expensive, costing 125,000 credits to pay off the mortgage to own the home outright or weekly mortgage payments of 500 credits on a weekly basis, so it's an extra expense that some players might not want. There are more affordable properties in places like New Atlantis.
  • The Dream Home isn't really necessary when players can buy homes or build outposts on other planets to use for benefits like storage and research. Building an outpost on Starfield's planets also gives players more control over their home structure and location.
  • Although it comes equipped with a kitchen including a cooking station, washroom facilities, and some balcony decor, it's otherwise completely undecorated, and players might not want to spend customizing it.

How to Remove the Dream Home Trait in Starfield

To remove the Dream Home trait, players can tell GalBank representative Landry Hollifield in the Commercial District of New Atlantis that they no longer want the house to foreclose it. When first meeting Landry, players must talk to him about debt collection opportunities, then speak with him again for the house dialogue options to become available. Choose 'The bank can have the house. Go ahead and foreclose.' To remove the Dream Home trait.

Players should also ensure they remove any decorations or items in the property before asking for foreclosure, or they'll belong to the bank. On the flip side, if players want to pay off the mortgage, they can only pay it with the full 125,0000 credits. Paying the mortgage means no more weekly payments or getting locked out, with players buying and owning the property outright.

How to Decorate and Customize Your Dream Home in Starfield

When first walking around the blank, empty halls of the Dream Home, players might wonder how to customize it, as the game doesn't explain where to do this. Two notepads on the kitchen sideboard explain how the mortgage payments and foreclosure work.

To decorate and customize the Dream Home, approach the square console on the wall to the left of the kitchen and select it to choose from several decoration options covering crafting, furniture, decorations, displays, and miscellaneous items. Players can also choose between variant designs of most items according to their tastes, such as different types of sofa.

However, players must farm crafting resources by exploring and surveying planets to construct home decor, as specified on each item's build requirements on the top left of the screen, such as Fiber and Aluminium. Some resources, like farming Caelumite in Starfield for spacesuit modding, are rare or only discoverable on particular planets, whereas those used in decorating are often more readily available, like Structural Material.

Players can then enter Build mode and change the camera position to move and place items around the house how they like, or even remove items and start again.

Starfield is available now on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
