As players embark on the epic space saga that is Starfield, they will encounter a seemingly infinite number of different settlements and environments with varying atmospheric conditions. In the 1,000-plus planets that Betheda's space exploration IP has to offer, the main character will need to accommodate for the conditions with the use of their spacesuit.
For those using third-person mode in particular, players may find their character looking out of place when wearing a full spacesuit in cities or areas where the conditions are suitable for humans to breathe in. To avoid standing out in the crowd for the wrong reasons in Starfield, here is a guide on how to set your spacesuit and helmet to be automatically unequipped when not needed.
How To Automatically Remove Spacesuits And Helmets
As players encounter human settlements, such as New Atlantis, they may find that their character sticks out like a sore thumb on account of them still wearing their spacesuit while exploring the stores and interacting with NPCs around them. While this can be quite comical to behold in the early stages of the game, it can have an impact on player immersion due to the simple fact that it does not look natural. This is especially the case in places like Akila City. Fortunately, there is an easy solution for this for both spacesuits and the oxygen-giving helmets needed for unbreathable atmospheres.
In the Starfield Inventory menu, players should visit both the spacesuit and helmet sections in order to adjust the game settings and have their player remove the protective gear in situations where it is not required. This can be done almost instantly by simply pressing the indicated button at the bottom of the screen when in the spacesuit or helmet menu. For Xbox players who have not adjusted controller mapping, this will be the RB button. This is a simple command that can be switched on or off. Once the setting has been changed, it will come into effect immediately and the character will look far more natural in their surroundings.
It is worth noting that this change is generally just cosmetic and won't have any impact on the player's ability to communicate with NPCs or complete any quest-related tasks within settlements. In fact, wearing a spacesuit and helmet in breathable environments goes all but unnoticed by non-playable characters in Starfield.
Starfield is now available on Xbox Series X/S and PC.
