In true Bethesda fashion, Starfield provides players with helpful companions who make challenging battles more manageable. However, as both players and enemies level up, the basic equipment of these companions may fail to defeat powerful monsters. This is when players feel the urge to provide their allies with better, or even modified, guns and equip them with resilient armor to gain an advantage in any battle. The only question is, how can players equip companions with different guns? Here’s the answer.

How to Arm Companions

To equip a companion with a particular weapon in Starfield, players should initiate a gear trade with them. Once the trade is complete, they can access their inventory, hover over the desired weapon, and press the Y button to assign it to the companion. It's important to note that the weapon must be in the companion’s inventory for this method to be effective.

For those who are unfamiliar, trading weapons in Starfield works similarly to unloading inventory items. Players can approach a companion and press the A button to initiate a conversation. From the dialogue menu, they should select "Trade Gear." Then, using the left trigger (LB) to open the personal inventory, players can press A on any item to trade it.

How to Fix Companion Not Using Assigned Weapon

If a companion is not using the assigned gun, it indicates that they have depleted their ammunition. This can be resolved by providing the companion with at least one round of ammo for that specific weapon. Additionally, it is recommended to equip them with an infinite gun, such as a Cutter, to ensure they never run out of bullets again.

Some players report that companions only require a single box of ammunition to operate any gun, and they will not run out of ammo as long as players provide them with at least one round. However, this information has yet to be officially confirmed, as it might simply be a glitch.

How to Change Companions’ Outfit

Similar to equipping companions with guns, players can also change the outfits of their allies by pressing the Y button while selecting an attire from their inventory.

While players can attempt to change a companion’s attire, this does not guarantee that the companion will wear the provided costume, as they possess a level of autonomy over their clothing choices.
