Summary

  • The ship customization in Starfield allows players to recreate famous ships from various sci-fi franchises, including the Borg Cube from Star Trek.
  • The ship builder in Starfield focuses on balancing weight, mobility, and power to create a viable starship that can support crew and handle enemies.
  • While the ship builder is already impressive, the addition of mods in the future will further enhance the customization options and elevate the overall experience of the game.

The ship customization in Starfield is robust enough that a player managed to recreate the Borg Cube from Star Trek simply by using the feature. When Starfield was announced, the excitement from Bethesda fans was palpable, but it wasn't until the showcase at Starfield Direct that the hype for the game skyrocketed. For many, the biggest highlight from the deep dive ended up being debut of Starfield's ship builder, which lets players construct the space vessel of their dreams, module by module.

While players have had their gripes with the lack of immersion in Starfield's space exploration, being able to create all sorts of starships through the builder has remained one of the game's biggest strengths post-launch. From an X-Wing to the Millennium Falcon, Starfield fans have tried to recreate the most popular ships from Star Wars, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that someone attempted to do the same with the other big sci-fi franchise.

A player named IngeniousIdiocy shared their design of a Borg Cube on the official Starfield subreddit, where they showcased the iconic Star Trek vessel through a video. Needless to say: it's a truly formidable, unorthodox build, and sadly not designed for actual gameplay. The grav drive, reactor, shield, fuel tanks, and cargo hold were all brilliantly hidden in a 2x2 hollow inside the cube itself, but the big downside is the ship's mobility rating of 36. Furthermore, its cubical design and size blocks out most of the camera in first-person and third-person mode.

The ship builder in Starfield is primarily designed around balancing weight, mobility, and how much power a vessel demands. Though the system offers plenty of options in terms of different visuals, the gameplay goal is to create a viable starship that can support a roster of crewmates, as well as being sturdy enough to tackle the Crimson Fleet pirates that lurk about in the Settled Systems. Some ship upgrades even allow players to hide contraband items in Starfield, which allows them to bypass the law enforcement scanners whenever they grav jump into civilized space.

Ultimately, even though the ship builder at launch is an impressive feature, it will no doubt get even better with Starfield mods in the coming months. Though many useful mods have already cropped up on Starfield Nexus, the Creation Kit's release will truly open up the game and allow modders to elevate the experience similarly to how Skyrim and Fallout 4 mods transformed their respective titles.

Starfield is available now on PC and Xbox Series X/S.
