Summary
- Starfield, despite being hailed as the least buggy game by Bethesda, still launched with various glitches like the bizarre disappearance of an entire city.
- A new and significant glitch in Starfield involves random objects, such as asteroids or alien creatures, attaching themselves to players' ships and preventing them from leaving or traveling properly. Some players have found temporary solutions, but others are forced to revert to earlier saves.
- Continuous updates and an unofficial community patch have been introduced to fix major issues in Starfield, but the game's reliance on procedural generation and limited space exploration have drawn criticism from fans.
An alien stowaway managed to attach itself on top of a Starfield player's ship, preventing them from leaving the planet's orbit and effectively freezing their playthrough. Though Microsoft billed Starfield as the least buggy game ever developed by Bethesda, it still launched with its fair share of glitches, even some truly bizarre ones – such as making the entire city of New Atlantis disappear. That being said, most of these issues did little to meaningfully impede gameplay.
Each new Starfield update introduced significant fixes to the game, and work on an unofficial Starfield community patch has been well underway since launch. However, much like Fallout 76, Starfield has seen a somewhat mixed reception from Bethesda fans who have critiqued a few of its controversial design choices, such as its reliance on procedural generation or the lack of proper space exploration. In order to grav jump from one planet to the next, Starfield players need to select the destination from their menu and use the game's fast travel feature to make the trip. In practice, interstellar travel in Starfield is a loading screen, and though a jump can be made during space combat, players cannot fast travel while enemies are nearby.
A Starfield player named omfg_itsnotbutter somehow had a Hunting Cagebrain glitch onto their ship while flying in space above the moon Piazzi IV-C. The cagebrain is one of the moon's native fauna, so it's likely that the critter was picked up during takeoff. However, since it counts as a hostile beast, and due to the inability to leave the ship and kill the cagebrain, this Starfield player's sole solution to the problem is to reload to an earlier save, as it prevents the use of fast travel and simply flying down onto a planet in Starfield is impossible.
It would appear that this type of glitch is still common among Starfield players, as many in the Reddit thread mentioned similar objects attaching themselves on top of their ship. Asteroids, companions, other ships, and even New Atlantis itself would mysteriously tether and follow the player around. Some fans have speculated that since Starfield allows them to sit and relax in the cockpit – having a full view of the landing zone – some objects from the loaded exterior could glitch onto the ship, ultimately causing the issue when taking off into space.
While using the ship builder in Starfield to either switch parts (or switch to a different vessel entirely) can fix this issue for some players, others are stuck with their "copilot" until they either use Starfield's console commands to remove the entity, or revert to an earlier save. While Bethesda will hopefully address the issue by the time Shattered Space makes its debut, it certainly remains one of the most bizarre bugs in Starfield.
