In many parts of the world, lobsters are the rarest and most valuable kinds of shellfish. This includes Stardew Valley, where Lobsters are the most valuable things you can find in a crab pot.

However, lobsters are also the rarest crab-pot fish. Unlike other shellfish, the alternatives to using crab pots are few and far between, and so you'll need to think of ways to adjust the odds more in your favor. Fortunately, there are a few ways to do so.

Lobsters and Crab Pots

Stardew Valley Full Crab Pots
A row of full crab pots in Stardew Valley.

In Stardew Valley, you unlock access to the crab pot recipe at Fishing 3. Each one costs 40 wood and 3 iron bars to craft, although someone with the Trapper profession can reduce this cost to 25 wood and 2 copper bars.

Once you have a crab pot, you can place it in any water tile adjacent to a space you can walk on. After that, you must add a piece of bait and wait one day. Special bait types don't come with special benefits, so only use basic bait. Players with the Luremaster profession don't have to add bait. The next day, something will be in the crab pot.

Every crab pot has a 38 percent chance of catching trash instead of shellfish, and this includes green algae and seaweed. The type of shellfish you can catch depends on whether you placed the pot in freshwater or saltwater. You can only catch lobsters in saltwater, and they have the lowest odds of any shellfish: four percent.

One way you can deal with this problem is to get the Mariner profession. "Mariner" is one of the Fishing 10 professions, and if you have it you won't get junk items in your crab pots. On top of that, your odds of getting any type of shellfish are equal. Since there are seven saltwater crab-pot shellfish, you get a one-in-seven chance of catching a lobster, or about 14 percent. If you aren't a Mariner, you can switch professions by interacting with the Statue of Uncertainty in the Sewers and spending 10,000g.

Another way to get a lobster is to build enough crab pots to beat the odds. With four percent odds, you can set 25 crab pots and expect to get roughly one lobster per day. Even 10-20 crab pots will give you a decent chance of finding a lobster every day.

There are two other ways of getting a lobster. However, both are expensive and can take a long time.

  • A lobster is one of the items the Traveling Cart can sell. The price is random, but the range is between 360g and 1,000g.
  • The Statue of Endless Fortune (you must buy it for 1 million in the casino) produces a lobster on Fall 5, Elliott's birthday. Elliot loves lobsters, but you don't have to give the statue's lobster to him.

How to Use Lobsters

Stardew Valley Lobster Bisque
The Lobster Bisque recipe in Stardew Valley.
  • Gus will send you a letter asking for a lobster on Fall 6 of Year 2, starting the quest "Wanted: Lobster." Your reward is a friendship heart and 500g.
  • You can start a lobster fish pond on your farm. Aged lobster roe sells for 180g, and the pond also produces trash items, coral, beach warp totems, sea urchins, and nautilus shells.
  • You must have a lobster to make the food recipe Lobster Bisque. You can learn this recipe from The Queen of Sauce on Winter 14, Year 2, or by getting Willy to nine hearts and then checking the mail the next day.
  • Lobsters count as fish for "any fish" recipes like Maki Rolls and Sashimi.
  • You can add a lobster (or any saltwater shellfish) to the sewing machine to create a special sailor shirt. Unlike the regular sailor shirt, you can dye the body of the lobster sailor shirt instead of the neckerchief.
