For a little while now, fans have been waiting for the next Star Wars game that Respawn is working on. The studio is well known for its Star Wars Jedi series, so one could have reasonably expected something similar. However, at Star Wars Celebration, the studio finally unveiled its next galactic adventure, which comes in the form of a turn-based strategy game called Star Wars Zero Company. While it may not be Respawn's usual Star Wars fare, the concept has a ton of potential to shine.

Collaborating with Bit Reactor, Respawn Entertainment is set to bring players back to the Clone Wars through Star Wars Zero Company. It remains to be seen if that blend works, but the title already seems to have a significant advantage within the turn-based strategy genre. These types of titles thrive on the variety of combat, and throughout the Star Wars galaxy, there's no shortage of enemies for the studio to pull from. Plus, these enemies don't have to just be pulled from the pre-established canon, as the era is rife with potential for exciting original foes.

Turn-based Strategy Games Thrive on Enemy Variety

Turn-based tactics games are all about fighting back against countless foes using the skills and attributes of various unique characters. With every couple of levels, new units tend to be introduced, either as brand-new foes or twists on pre-established ones. These new foes then require new tactics and abilities to take out, which constantly keeps players on their toes.

That model drives titles such as XCOM, and with each entry in the franchise, that enemy variety seems to only get more varied. Without that variety, the genre can get a bit stale, especially as players master the best ways to take out their foes. So, studios want to do everything they can to keep things fresh and exciting throughout the entire experience. Star Wars Zero Company seems to be set up to deliver just that.

The Clone Wars is the Perfect Setting For Enemy Variety

The Star Wars galaxy is a vast place, constantly expanding with each new piece of SW media. Because of that, there are countless races for Bit Reactor and Respawn to pull from when building out its enemy roster. Players could fight back against the Tusken Raiders on Tatooine, defend themselves against an onslaught of Geonosians on Geonosis, go to war against criminal syndicates like the Pykes or Hutts, or even go head-to-head with the Nightsisters of Dathomir. In the chaos of the Clone Wars, there are tons of planets that Zero Company has good reason to touch down on, and virtually limitless groups waiting to take them out.

Not only does the abundance of planets give Star Wars Zero Company so many races to choose from, but so too does the primary antagonist of the Clone Wars: the Separatists. During the Clone Wars, the Separatists utilized a massive droid army to resist the influence of the Galactic Republic. In canon media, the army is already made up of a wide assortment of different droid types that could make for some powerful enemies. Outside of that, Respawn and Bit Reactor can introduce their own unique takes on droid models, as the Separatists were well-known for testing a wide assortment of different unit types.

For Star Wars Zero Company to succeed, it really needs to nail down its enemy variety to keep combat fresh. Luckily, the Star Wars galaxy and the game's era have no shortage of unique droids and species to pull from. Between the established canon and Respawn's new ideas, Zero Company has all the enemy material it could ask for.
