The Star Wars sequel trilogy received the classic original and sequel trilogy DVD treatment thanks to one dedicated fan.

With the 2012 acquisition of Lucasfilm by Disney, Star Wars fans were treated to a whole new trilogy of films and a litany of other smaller projects more than a decade after the Star Wars prequel trilogy. This large space in time meant that the landscape for many facets of the film experience had changed between the release of the prequel trilogy and the latest installments, including conventions for home media releases.

While there are many great things about the Star Wars sequel trilogy, one less-than-stellar change is the change to the aesthetic of the DVD releases for the original and prequel trilogies. However, one dedicated fan going by the username barrynomad has gone out of their way to rectify this issue, taking to Reddit's r/StarWars board to post a few images of their fan-made Star Wars sequel trilogy DVD art. “Here’s a little project I’ve been working on and off for the past few years," the artist wrote. "Finally decided to finish them out and print them up! I love the classic DVD aesthetic and wanted it applied to the sequels. I even tried to find some more obscure and silly promo photos to match the occasional awkwardness of the old designs. Enjoy!”

The photos show custom DVD versions of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker, all looking nearly indistinguishable from the DVD releases of the earlier trilogies, which the original author of the post also took side-by-side comparison shots of. Other fans on the subreddit were quick to appreciate the undertaking, with many comments highlighting the accurate rendition of the style, the well-written blurbs, and more. Several respondents expressed a desire to have similarly done art for their own home media copies. With a lot coming up for Star Wars in 2024 and beyond, barrynomad will have more opportunities to try their hand at this project again.

While many people belittle appreciation for home releases, such as Shazam director David Sanberg saying the best days of physical media are behind fans, the response to this Reddit post shows that the value in home releases, especially those with nostalgic value to a fandom, will always have a place at the table of media offerings. Star Wars, which has maintained a dominant position in its genre and popular culture for almost half a century, is the perfect case study of this powerful attachment. With even more media coming out and fans still as dedicated as ever, it's likely that more people will go out of their way to relive the good times via customization.

The Star Wars franchise is available for viewing on Disney Plus.
