Star Wars Outlaws was a bit of a mixed bag on launch. Too much forced stealth, some very unresponsive and inconsistent enemy AI, and some other major technical issues dragged Star Wars Outlaws down during its release window last year. But Ubisoft has put a lot of time and effort into fixing a lot of these issues, allowing Star Wars Outlaws' positive elements to finally shine through.
One of Star Wars Outlaws' best features is its beautifully-realized worlds that all feel authentically Star Wars. This hard-earned atmosphere goes hand in hand with Star Wars Outlaws' unique premise, which highlights an area of the franchise that's rarely explored in mainstream media: the galaxy's criminal underworld. While a sequel to Star Wars Outlaws seems unlikely given its "softer than expected" sales, it's still a possibility one day, and it would have the ideal setting.
Star Wars Battlefront 3's Cancellation Feels More Ironic By the Day
EA reportedly rejected DICE's pitch for Star Wars Battlefront 3, and that decision is starting to feel quite ironic given EA's recent strategy.
A Star Wars Outlaws Sequel Should Be Set After Return of the Jedi
The Mandalorian and its Spinoffs Set Up The Post-Empire Criminal Underworld Nicely
A good portion of Season 1 of The Mandalorian revolved around the galaxy's criminal underworld, and more specifically, how it was thriving in the absence of the Empire. Set five years after Star Wars: The Return of the Jedi, The Mandalorian shows a galaxy still very much in turmoil. The New Republic hasn't quite gotten its act together yet, and it doesn't have the resources needed to hunt down or prosecute most pirates, smugglers, or bounty hunters, especially the ones located in the Outer Rim territories.
The Book of Boba Fett sheds a bit more light on the status of various criminal syndicates during this period. Despite losing its head honcho, the Hutt Cartel is surviving just fine with Bib Fortuna on the throne, and the Pykes have practically taken over Tatooine, building an empire off the back of the planet's spice supplies.
A Star Wars Outlaws Sequel Should Follow in The Mandalorian's Footsteps
An unlikely Star Wars Outlaws sequel could make great use of this post-Empire setting. With The Mandalorian and its spinoffs being set around five years after Return of the Jedi, a direct sequel to Outlaws would make sense, as protagonist Kay Vess would only be about six years older than she was in the original game.
A direct sequel could follow a slightly older, wiser, and more experienced Kay Vess as she's trying to navigate a new batch of criminal syndicates during this uncertain period for the galaxy. Along the way, Kay could meet plenty of familiar faces, both from her past and from the wider Star Wars universe.
The ending of Star Wars Outlaws sees the bounty hunter Vail setting off to earn herself a seat at the top of the bounty hunting guild with the stolen codex Kay has given her. Six years later, it would make sense for Vail to be running the show at the guild, and her relationship with Kay could pave the way for some cameos from fellow bounty hunters like Cad Bane, Fennec Shand, and Din Djarin himself, as well as fellow guild higher-ups like Greef Karga.
