Kay Vess and her adorable companion, Nix, aren't the only great characters in Star Wars Outlaws. The entire galaxy is full of colorful characters and dastardly villains fans love to hate.

Star Wars Outlaws’ Kay Vess is a Scoundrel Through and Through

The Best War Games speaks with Star Wars Outlaws developers to scratch the surface of what makes Kay Vess a thieving scoundrel with a beating heart.

1

Some of the best game or movie characters are favorites because they make people smile or laugh. Often, they are the ones who make the story interesting or add a little spice to a quest. There is no doubt about a side character's value, especially in an open-world adventure like Star Wars Outlaws. Be aware that while major spoilers will be avoided here, there may be mild spoilers throughout.

10 Ank Parakow

Small But Mighty

ank and kay vess

Ank may be small but don't let her stature fool you: this Chadra-Fan can handle herself. With her no-nonsense attitude and enthusiasm for blowing things up, there is something inherently likable about Ank.

Kay Vess first meets Ank during a main mission searching for a safecracker. This is where players discover Ank's tragic backstory and find out why she has been locked up. Ank knows that she is perceived simply as a cute little bat creature, so she must prove to those around her that she is so much more than that. She is hard-working and efficient, with a broad knowledge of explosives and a knack for getting into trouble.

9 Danka Orsato

Gruff, Tough, And Loveable

danka and kay vess in the cantina

Danka is one of the first characters Kay meets as she gets involved with the underworld. As an independent broker, Danka has had to maintain a tough exterior to work with some of the galaxy's roughest syndicates, but under all that gruff is an unexpected warmth.

Star Wars Games With The Most Planets

There are a lot of great Star Wars games out there that let players explore a multitude of planets.

Danka is like that aunt who seems stern and stony-faced but soon becomes the one to call when there is trouble. She deals out a helpful balance of harsh truths and life-saving advice which can only come from someone who has years of experience in shady corners of the galaxy.

8 Jabba The Hutt

The Icon, The Legend

star-wars-outlaws-game-rant-advance-kay-vess-jabba-the-hutt

As one of the most powerful criminal gangsters in the entire galaxy, Jabba the Hutt must be admired... Or he will throw you to a Sarlacc. His political influence on the worlds around him is nothing short of impressive even if you disagree with his methods.

Jabba knows everything and sees everything. There is no hiding from this cruel and ruthless villain. As an iconic character from the original 80s masterpiece Return of the Jedi, Jabba is a firm favorite every fan loves to hate, and it was a real joy to see this "slimy piece of worm-ridden filth" again.

7 Shuma The Travelling Merchant

She's Everywhere. Seriously.

shuma the traveling merchant and kay vess

Shuma is one of the many merchants in Star Wars Outlaws but to some players, she is special. Perhaps it is the way she seems to pop up exactly when you need her.

Star Wars Outlaws Devs Talk Designing the Trailblazer

Developers at Massive detailed the design of Star Wars Outlaws' hero ship, the Trailblazer, and how it flies and fights across the galaxy.

1

Players won't find Shuma on any planet's Vendor list. She is a random occurrence to be blessed with. The Traveling Merchant event notification will appear suddenly as Kay explores another corner of the world, and it is worth dropping a quest to pursue her. All she wants is to make enough money for her and her wife to retire in peace and, honestly, it's the least Kay could do.

6 Surat Nuat

Not Someone To Cross

From the highly likable to the completely detestable, the next entry is Surat Nuat. This Sullustan psychopath is a well-connected crime boss who murdered his whole family and froze his brother in carbonite.

Surat is the owner of The Alcazar cantina based on the planet Akiva where he and his henchmen work for the Hutt cartel. His main motivations are greed and self-interest, and nothing will get between him and his goals. Not even his own family. The way he talks about what he did to his parents will send a chill down even the most stoic spine.

5 Lady Qi'ra

Girl-Bossing Across The Galaxy

Lady Qi'ra and Kay speaking in the snow

On the surface, Qi'ra looks like a well-dressed member of the nobility, but all that finery hides a tough life full of hardship. There is more to Lady Qi'ra than an expensive outfit and a beautiful face.

How Star Wars Outlaws Devs Approached Story and Character Design

In an interview with The Best War Games, Massive Entertainment talked about Star Wars Outlaws' story, and the inspiration behind some of its characters.

1

Qi'ra grew up on the streets alongside Han Solo, getting into scrapes as scrumrats and just trying to stay alive. She is one of the most enigmatic characters in Star Wars Outlaws, giving little hints here and there about her life and how she got to where she is today. It becomes pretty clear that Qi'ra worked exceptionally hard to reach the powerful position she has within the Crimson Dawn.

4 Bosnok

High-Roller In A Glass Jar

bosnak's choice in star wars outlaws

Bosnok is the kind of acquaintance where most of the conversations are just an exchange of friendly insults. He may be stuck in a large glass vial but that doesn't stop him from being the best Sabacc player in Toshara.

Bosnok is smart and quick-witted and this has saved his life possibly more than once. Kay's new Gallusian friend runs a high-rollers Sabacc parlour in Mirogana Market; the perfect place to spend big and win even bigger! Just make sure there are no hard feelings between friends when Kay loses a few credits.

3 Chef Droid

The Best Table Service.

A hard-working scoundrel must eat at some point and these street food vendors are the best places to be. Grab a hot meal in every city or town in the galaxy - just follow the delicious smells!

Kay at the end of Star Wars Outlaws
How Long is Star Wars Outlaws?

The main story of Star Wars Outlaws is surprisingly short, but the ridiculous amount of side content more than makes up for this.

By

Each street food vendor is run by a knife-wielding droid with flaming blowtorches. The chef droid's talents should be seen to be believed. From the moment Kay and Nix sit down, they are given a culinary show like no other. Vegetables are chopped at lightning speed and the meat is flame-grilled within an inch of its life before being set in front of the pair with flair and precision. Want some extra spices? The chef droid will sprinkle them on himself. Bon appetit!

2 Sheriff Quint Cresadde

Fastest Draw In Tatooine

quint and kay vess

Quint Cressade is trying her best to be a better person and there is not much more anyone can ask from a former pirate. She quickly became a notorious gang member but eventually realized she did not like the person she had become.

One of the hardest things to do in life is to self-reflect and attempt to change one's faults, but Quint did just that. She didn't want to be the heartless person she had turned out to be. Instead, she left the gang and went back home to focus on helping her local community instead. She didn't leave her gunslinging days behind her completely, of course. Quint is now the tough-talking, big-hearted Sheriff of Wayfar, Tatooine.

1 ND-5

Brooding Droid In A Trench Coat

DD-5 and Kay Vess

ND-5 is one of the last BX Commando droids to exist and over the years has taken some serious damage. He hides all these battle scars beneath a trench coat, which just happens to also make him look kind of handsome... Right?

He is a brooding, enigmatic guy who has been through a lot in his long life but doesn't like to talk about it. A sense of regret and sadness hangs in the air when he speaks of some of the things he has seen and done, but all of this is tempered by his droid logic. Despite, or perhaps because of, the life he has had, ND-5 can be sweet and considerate; traits one may not assume a droid could possess.
